SAN FRANCISCO – TCU is three wins away from completing a clean sweep of the Battle in the Bay Classic.
Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley teamed up to post a 5-0 record in the main singles and doubles draws of the tournament on Friday to advance to the semifinals of both competitions.
Fomba and Fearnley are on opposite sides of the singles bracket, setting up an all-TCU final should both players win on Saturday. Fomba is the top overall seed while Fearnley is No. 5.
The duo further solidified their No. 1 ITF doubles ranking with an 8-2 defeat of Andre Ilagan and Axel Labrunie of Hawaii.
Fomba first took down Oklahoma's Nathan Han 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 to secure his spot in the singles quarterfinals. He then rallied from a 1-0 deficit to eliminate No. 8 seed Yuta Kikuchi from the tournament. The France native fell short in a hard-fought first set 7-6, but then turned the match on its ear in the second frame. Fomba, ranked No. 5 in the ITF singles rankings, cruised past Kikuchi 6-1, then secured match victory with a 6-4 triumph in set three.
Fearnley's march toward the finals has been equally impressive. He first completed his second sweep in as many matches with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Arizona's Colton Smith, then emerged victorious in a three-set affair vs. Iiro Vasa of San Diego, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
Fomba and Fearnley are set to face Ryder Jackson and Lucas Magnaudet of USC in the doubles semifinals.
Fomba's singles assignment is No. 7 seed Jonas Eriksson Ziverrts of Arizona while Fearnley and Jackson will also meet on the singles court.
