Chan earns 100th career victory, partners with Quirijns on quarterfinal doubles run
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – TCU traveled five players south to College Station for the ITA Texas Regional, and all five members of the quintet found themselves in the winner's circle.
TCU pocketed nine victories, including five in main draw action, across its four-day stay at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs' participation was highlighted by a quarterfinal doubles appearance by Duncan Chan and Kaj Quirijns.
The junior tandem, partnering together for the first time, rolled to an 8-1 triumph over Rice's Tommy Czaplinski and Gabriel Porras in the round of 16 after benefiting from a walkover to begin the draw. They ultimately fell to eventual finalists Connor Henry Van Schalkwyk and Zsombor Velcz of Baylor.
Chan and Quirijns' victory on the court was noteworthy in that Chan picked up his 100th career victory as a Horned Frog. Chan, who qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships in September, improved his combined record to 18-2 this fall.
All four Frogs who competed in singles notched at least one win.
Albert Pedrico reached the round of 16 behind straight set victories over Fabian Anthin (Lamar) and Oskar Grzegorzewski (UTSA). Pedrico, the preseason ITA No. 77 singles player, came two points short of the quarterfinals, as he dropped a 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5) decision to No. 110 Kholo Montsi of Texas A&M.
Julian Alonso earned his fifth singles win of the fall in the round of 64, battling back from a set down to defeat Dennis Dutine (ACU), 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Filip Apltauer led TCU with three wins overall, all of which came in the consolation draw. He eased by Texas Tech's Felipe Pagnacco, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals before withdrawing on personal choice.
Quirijns put another singles win on the board for the Horned Frogs in the round of 16 in consolation action via a 6-4, 6-1 sweep of Saul Berdullas of UT Arlington.
The collective efforts improved TCU's combined fall record to 57-25 through five invitationals.
TCU now breaks for a week before taking the court for its penultimate fall event, the ITA Central Sectional Championships, on Nov. 6-9 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The tournament is the last chance for players to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships, which run from Nov. 18-23 in Orlando, Fla. From the ITA Central Sectional Championships, six singles players and three doubles teams will earn berths in college' tennis marquee individual championship.
