Juan Carlos Aguilar closes out the victory on Senior Day
FORT WORTH -- The No. 1-ranked TCU men's tennis team defeated No. 11 Texas, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
After dropping the doubles point, the Horned Frogs (20-3, 3-0) stormed back for the win behind four straight singles victories. Jake Fearnley, Sander Jong and Pedro Vives won in straight sets to give TCU a 3-1 lead. Juan Carlos Aguilar then broke serve for the second time in the final set to end it with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win. He is now 3-0 in Big 12 play this season.
"I'm very proud of the way our guys handled losing the doubles point and dealing with a lot going on with senior day, alumni day and being ranked No. 1," TCU Head Coach David Roditi said. "I'm also proud of our guys playing in tough conditions with a lot of wind for everybody. It wasn't the best tennis on either side, but it was all about competing and I thought we did a good job of that.
"Texas is a heck of a team. To be fair, their best player is hurt and they've had a lot of injuries. When they get healthy, they're going to be a great team. At the same time, they have six very good players and had the doubles point. I'm proud of our guys and alumni as well as very thankful for them showing up. The fact that Charlie Aguilar got to clinch the match at home on Senior Day in front of all the alumni and against a really good player was fun to see. I don't know if he was motivated by the fact he was an Aggie before he was a Horned Frog. Either way, he was extra motivated today and did a great job. There are definitely things we can do better, but it puts us in a good spot in the Big 12. We have to get ready to battle on Thursday at Oklahoma State and then Saturday at Oklahoma with a lot of work to be done. We have a short week ahead of us with a long trip before we come home to host the conference tournament. I'm really proud and want to thank all the staff and everybody who put in so much work for alumni weekend. All the alums came to support the guys, and I hope they had a great time. It was a really cool atmosphere and just another great day for college tennis. Go Frogs!"
Between singles and doubles, Aguilar and fellow senior Tim Ruehl were honored on Senior Day.
Jong's singles victory was his team-best 17th of the year, against just four defeats.
TCU improved to 11-3 against top-25 opponents this season.
