Horned Frogs win their seventh Big 12 title in seven years
STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 1 TCU clinched a share of its fifth Big 12 Conference title in the last six completed seasons on Thursday with a 5-1 win over No. 52 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla.
"It was a good performance by the guys on the road against a team with a lot of new players and some very good positions," said head coach David Roditi, who has led the Horned Frogs to seven total Big 12 titles, including tournament play, over the last seven years. "We did a good job focusing from start to finish and didn't allow them to come back. Winning the doubles point is always nice and then getting a fast start on three courts allowed the other matches to settle into their match. Now we get to go to Norman and try to win the Big 12 title outright."
TCU (21-3, 4-0 Big 12) earned the doubles point with a 6-2 win by the No. 3 pairing of Juan Carlos Aguilar and Pedro Vives. Moments later, the point was won with a 6-3 victory by the No. 2 pairing of Sander Jong and Lui Maxted to improve to 14-4 this season.
The Horned Frogs started quick in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 win by Jake Fearnly at the No. 4 spot. Moments later, Juan Carlos Aguilar earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.
Sander Jong clinched a share of the Big 12 title with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
The two teams played out the remaining matches which saw Luc Fomba improve to 12-4 on the season with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win at No. 1.
The Horned Frogs can win the Big 12 outright and finish conference play undefeated when they play at No. 38 Oklahoma on Saturday at 5 p.m.
