Sander Jong wins his third set, 6-0, to defeat No. 1 Ohio State, 4-3

SEATTLE, Wash. – No. 4 TCU men's tennis (11-1) will be playing in the ITA Team Indoor National Championship final match after taking down No. 1 Ohio State, 4-3, inside the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash. Junior Sander Jong clinched the victory with a 6-0 bagel in his third set, sending TCU to the championship match for the first time since 1992.

The Horned Frogs have now beaten the No. 1-ranked team in the nation twice this season (Florida, 4-3, at home 1/14) for the first time in program history. TCU will play the winner of Baylor vs. Tennessee in the final, tomorrow at 2 p.m.

This was TCU's ninth win in a row and sixth straight over a ranked opponent, the longest winning streak against ranked opponents since 2018. Seven of TCU's 11 victories this season have come against Top 20 ranked programs and two have now come over the No. 1-ranked team.

"This is a very exciting day, not just for our team, but for our whole program," head coach David Roditi said. "I'm really happy and proud of the guys to come through like that. Obviously, Ohio State, indoors is always really tough to beat. Our guys got it done. I'm so proud of them. The doubles point was critical and then we had a lot of lopsided singles matches. I felt really good about winning at No. 3 coming in and when it came down to that, for Sander to handle losing the second set and coming out and dominating the third set, was really amazing. We'll keep fighting! Thanks to all the Horned Frog fans who came out here to cheer for us. The final is tomorrow. We're ready to battle for the national title."

The Horned Frogs won the doubles point with a pair of convincing victories over the Top 2 ranked doubles pairings in the nation. Sander Jong and Lui Maxted took down No. 2 Trotter / Boulais, 6-2, before Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley defeated No. 1 Vocel / Cash, 6-4.

In singles, Ohio State won the first three completed matches to take a 3-1 lead, before Maxted and Fomba won their matches in straight sets to tie the score. Jong had a chance to clinch the match in a second set tiebreaker, but came up short, forcing a winner-take-all third set. In the final set, Jong dominated, winning 75 percent of the total points to cruise to a 6-0 victory and win the dual for the Frogs.

DOUBLES QUICK HITS

TCU won the doubles point with a pair of wins at the top of the lineup.
Sander Jong and Lui Maxted were the first to finish, earning their best win of the season, 6-2, over the No. 2 ranked pairing in the country.
The duo got a break to go in front, 2-1, before salting away the match with another break to go in front, 5-2, before holding serve for the win.
The No. 25-ranked pairing in the land improve to 8-1 this season, all at No. 2.
They boast the best record on the team (8-1) and are 2-0 against ranked pairings after defeating No. 6 earlier this season.
Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley clinched the doubles point, playing at No. 1. Taking down the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the nation, 6-4.
Fomba/Fearnley took down Vocel/Cash from Ohio State, handing them their second loss of the season, 20-2.
TCU's No. 1 pairing is a perfect 3-0 against ranked opponents this season, taking down No. 32, No. 14 and now, No. 1.
They broke their opponents first serve of the match, holding serve for the rest of play to collect the win.
They improve to 8-2 together this season, all at No. 1.
TCU is 23-5 in doubles matches this season and is outscoring opponents 184-133.
TCU has won the doubles point in 11 of 12 matches this season.

SINGLES QUICK HITS

TCU won matches at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 to secure its ninth victory in a row, seventh overall over a ranked opponent and second over a No. 1 ranked team.
Lui Maxted recorded the first singles win for the Frogs, cutting the deficit to 3-2 with a straight-sets win at No. 6.
He improves to 2-0 this weekend and 6-3 overall this spring.
The freshman broke his opponent's serve to make it, 6-5, in his opening set, before holding serve. He dominated play in the second, getting a break to go in front, 3-1, then again to take a 5-2 lead, before holding serve for the win.
Maxted is now 4-1 overall this weekend.
Luc Fomba tied the dual, 3-3, with a straight-sets win at No. 1 over No. 6 Matej Vocel, the highest ranked win of his career.
He has won his last three singles matches, all against Top 20 opponents – No. 20 (Broska - Mississippi State), No. 17 (Rodesch – Virginia) and No. 6 (Vocel – Ohio State).
Fomba improves to 7-2 in singles matches this season and 3-2 against ranked opponents.
This was his first singles win of the tournament after his first two matches were left unfinished.
Jong clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 3: 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-0.
He dominated his third set, winning 23 of the final 28 points in the set (82.1 percent)
Jong leads the team with eight singles wins this season (8-3).
Jong won his third set, 6-0, his second bagel of the season and his fourth as a Horned Frog.
Jong improves his career record at Indoor Nationals to 15-6 overall and 8-3 in singles play.
TCU is 10-1 this season and 7-1 vs. Top 25 teams.
The Horned Frogs are 40-16 in singles matches this dual season.
