Johannessen takes first individually
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – No. 3 TCU sits atop the leaderboard after Day 1 of the WVU Classic featuring four of the top six teams in the NCAA. The Horned Frogs fired a team score of 2,357 in smallbore. Individually, Julie Johannessen took top spot in the smallbore final.
The match, featuring four teams that have accounted for every national championship since 2006, lived up to its billing on Day 1. No. 3 TCU leads the way after shooting a 2,357. No. 2 Alaska and No. 6 West Virginia fired identical marks of 2,351. No. 1 Kentucky sits fourth with a 2,333.
TCU had two shooters, Julie Johannessen and Stephanie Grundsoee, surpass the 590 mark, shooting a 591. Katie Zaun turned in a 589 to give TCU three of the top six scores in the match. In the second relay, Kristen Hemphill fired a 586 to help TCU cushion its lead. Also serving as a counter was Mikole Hogan who shot a 584.
Competing but not factoring in the team score were Nina Schuett (587), Anne White (585) and Stephanie Allan (579).
TCU had three of the eight qualifiers in the smallbore final. Johannessen outlasted West Virginia's Mary Tucker to finish first overall. She fired a 551.9, 4.3 points better than Tucker in the final. Zaun finished third overall after shooting a 408.4 in the final. Grundsoee sat fifth with a 352.3.
Alaska's Sara Karasova led all shooters with a 592. West Virginia's top shooter was Tal Engler, who fired a 590. Kentucky was led by Sofia Ceccarello's 587.
The match concludes Sunday with the air rifle portion of the match. Sighting for the first relay will begin at 8 a.m. (CT).
