TCU holds Texas to 199 yards in a 17-10 win in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas -- TCU's defense was dominant in a 17-10 win at Texas Saturday night, clinching a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.
The No. 4 Horned Frogs (10-0, 7-0) held the Longhorns to three points offensively and just 199 yards.
Since beginning Big 12 play in 2012, TCU is 8-3 against Texas with a 5-1 record in Austin. Sonny Dykes is now 3-0 as a head coach against the Longhorns.
A defensive struggle saw the Horned Frogs leading just 3-0 at the half. TCU extended the margin to 10-0 with 5:08 left in the third quarter when Kendre Miller took a handoff and outraced the Longhorns' defense down the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown.
Miller had a team-best 138 yards rushing on 21 carries for his fifth consecutive 100-yard game, the longest streak by a Horned Frog since Lonta Hobbs with five in 2002. Miller has a rushing score in all 10 games this year, the second-longest streak to begin a season in TCU history. TCU Board of Trustees member LaDainian Tomlinson ran for a touchdown in all 12 games in 2000. Miller's 11 consecutive games with a rushing touchdown rank second all-time at TCU, behind only Tomlinson (15, 1999-00).
The Longhorns' first points of the game came on a field goal with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. TCU answered with a 9 play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 31-yard touchdown pass from Max Duggan to Quentin Johnston for a 17-3 lead with 12:36 remaining.
Johnny Hodges led TCU's defense with 11 tackles, including combining with Shadrach Banks to stuff Bijan Robinson for no gain on a 4th-and-1 at the TCU 34 on Texas' opening series. It set the tone for the game as the Longhorns' star running back was held to 29 yards on 12 carries.
Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson had his third interception in the last four games and his fourth consecutive game with a takeaway.
