Horned Frogs finish in third place
DUBLIN, Ohio – In just her second event as a TCU Horned Frog, freshman Sofia Barroso Sá won the individual title, while guiding the TCU women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club on Tuesday.
Barroso Sá, who hails from Belmont, Portugal, opened Tuesday's final round just one shot back of first place and despite carding her highest score in the event, the true freshman still managed to pick up medalist honors with a score of +13 (77-72-80=229). She bested three players who all finished at 15-over par.
Barroso Sá becomes the first TCU freshman to win a tournament event since Sabrina Iqbal was co-medalist at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational back on Oct. 16, 2018. Ironically, it was just Iqbal's second collegiate tournament played also.
TCU posted individual medalist in back-to-back events for the first time since 2003 when D'Rae Ward won the USF Invitational (March 18, 2003) and Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout (March 25, 2003) in consecutive weeks. Sophomore Caitlyn Macnab won the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla., last weekend.
TCU finished third as a team, collecting back-to-back events in third place or better for the first time since a pair of second place finishes in 2020 at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational and the Hurricane Invitational. The Horned Frogs combined to card a final round score of +41 (329) on Tuesday, closing out the event with a score of +97 (315-317-329=961).
Junior Lois Lau registered a second-consecutive top-15 finish, rounding out the Barbara Nicklasu Cup in a tie for 11th place with a three-round score of +24 (75-84-81=240). Macnab followed with a top-15 finish as well, carding a final round score of +13 (85) on the way to a tie for 14th place with a combined score of +26 (76-81-85=242).
Senior Trinity King closed out her first tournament of the season in a tie for 33rd place with a score of +40 (87-86-83=256) and junior Sabrina Nguyen finished in sole possession of 38th place with a score of +45 (91-80-90=261).
Barroso Sá led the field on par 4's, averaging 4.17 strokes per hole for a combined score of 5-over par. Macnab ranked among the field's top-five players in both par 3's and par 5's. She tied for first on the par 3's with an average score of 3.08 and a score 1-over par, while finishing in a tie for second on the par 5's as she shot even par (5.00) for the event.
The Horned Frogs will be back in action again next week, heading back to the Midwest to compete in the Illini Invitational. The first two rounds will be played on Monday, Oct. 10, and final round action will be held that Tuesday, Oct. 11.
