Senior earns first-career win while beating some of the world's best
FORT WORTH – In a field that included 15 of the top 30 ranked amateurs in the world, it was TCU's Gustav Frimodt that finished on top as champion of the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday.
Frimodt (pronounced freh-mote) shot 5-under 65 for the round and 8-under 202, both tying a career-low vs. par. It was Frimodt's first college win of his career and it came under perfect golf conditions at Colonial Country Club.
Beginning on hole No. 10, the senior from Denmark was impressive from the start as he was 3-under through the first six holes after three birdies. For the second consecutive round, Frimodt eagled the par 5 No. 1 hole and did so with about a 10-foot putt. He made birdie on No. 2 to improve to 6-under for the round. His only blemish was a bogey on the final hole, No. 9.
In the clubhouse at 8-under overall, Frimodt had to wait out Pepperdine's William Mouw. The 22nd best amateur in the world tied Frimodt with six holes to play. He added a stroke with a bogey on No. 14, which proved to be the difference.
Jacob Skov Olesen also finished in the top 10 as he tied for eighth at 3-under 207. It was his lowest score ever at Colonial by six strokes. The senior from Denmark repeated his first round with a 2-under 68. Like Frimodt, Olesen made par or better on every hole until No. 9.
In a tournament that features 13 top 25 teams, including seven ranked inside the top 10, the Horned Frogs tied Oregon and No. 10 Florida for ninth place at 11-over 851. No. 13 North Carolina held its lead to win the tournament at 15-over 825.
TCU will return to action Oct. 17-19 at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
