Senior becomes fourth Horned Frog to fire a perfect score in air rifle
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kristen Hemphill was the brightest star on a day where No. 2 TCU rifle was clicking on all cylinders after coming off a three week hiatus. She became the fourth Horned Frog in program history to fire a perfect 600 in air rifle. It's the fifth time that a TCU shooter has hit the mark. Overall, TCU shot a 4,737 to take first place in the triangular match at Ohio State.
TCU opened the day with a team score of 2,350 in smallbore and finished with a 2,387 in air rifle. The air rifle mark is the seventh-best in program history, while the smallbore total is tied for seventh all-time.
Katie Zaun had a stellar day on the range, shooting a personal best aggregate score (1,187). She fired career-bests in both disciplines (589 smallbore; 598 air rifle) to lead all shooters on the day. Julie Johannessen finished second overall with an aggregate of 1,185. Hemphill finished fourth (1,185), Nina Schuett sixth (1,181) and Mikole Hogan rounded out the top 10 with an 1,175.
In smallbore, TCU fired three of the top four marks and five of the top eight. Johannessen led the way with a 591, followed by Zaun's 589 and Schuett's 588. Hemphill shot a 585 to finish sixth, while Abigail Gordon finished eighth with a 585.
TCU produced the top three scores in air rifle. The career-high performances from Hemphill and Zaun were the top two marks in the discipline. Johannessen sat third on the day with a 595. Serving as a counter, Mikole Hogan matched her career-high with a 594. Schuett sat 10th with a 593 and Grace Taschuk finished 13th with a 591.
Ohio State finished second on the day with a 4,708 (2,341 smallbore; 2,367 air rifle). Viktor Kiss was the top shooter for the Buckeyes, finishing third (592 smallbore; 593 air rifle). Nebraksa fired a team score of 4,699 (2,320 smallbore; 2,379 air rifle). Cecelia Ossi was the top shooter for the Cornhuskers (586 smallbore; 595 air rifle).
The Horned Frogs return to action on Nov. 5 at West Virginia in a match that will feature four programs that have won a National Championship. Joining the Horned Frogs and the Mountaineers will be Alaska-Fairbanks and Kentucky. The two-day tournament will open with smallbore on Saturday and finish with air rifle on Sunday.
