TCU sweeps Oklahoma State, 4-0, stays perfect at home
FORT WORTH – No. 6 TCU men's tennis (13-5, 2-0) made a statement on Friday night, sweeping No. 18 Oklahoma State, 4-0, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs have swept all four home matches this season, winning by a combined score of 17-0. Tadeas Paroulek only lost three games across three sets in both singles and doubles play.
"It's so nice to play at home on such a beautiful day," head coach David Roditi said. "I can tell the guys really enjoy playing here at it showed today. I felt that this was one of our better performances of the year. Everyone contributed, beginning with doubles. We had a bit of a hiccup with lighting pushing back the start, but the guys still came out with such great energy. Max Kurzban played at a very high level in doubles. I'm so happy for him. He's one of those guys that keeps stepping up when we need him. In singles, it was just what you would want. We won a bunch of first sets, Teddy got us a quick point and then Jake handled himself so professionally, moving around so well and winning a critical match at four. It's good to see Jake moving like that and being aggressive with his feet, great energy and great maturity from him to get us the win. Alastair, another win. You know Alastair is always going to show up, there's no doubt, he just loves to compete. It was a battle of the Brits at No. 2 and Alastair did a great job of handling the humidity. I'm happy for us. We have another Big 12 battle on Sunday against OU. We love the support we got at home today and hopefully we'll see even more on Sunday. Go Frogs!"
The Horned Frogs continued their strong run of form in doubles play, winning the doubles point for the third dual in a row without dropping a match. The strong performances have been due in large part to Max Kurzban and Jake Fearnley. TCU's newest doubles team is 3-0 since joining forces at Stanford and have won a match in each of the last three duals. Sander Jong and Tadeas Paroulek were back at the top of their games at No. 2 doubles, winning easily, 6-2.
TCU caried that momentum into the early stages of singles, going up a break on five courts after the first four games. The Frogs managed to collect four opening sets before Paroulek put the team in front with a quick win over his countryman, 6-1, 6-0. Paroulek was aggressive is his play on court five, dictating points and forcing his opponent into near impossible situations to take control of his match.
Fearnley showed tremendous poise in his second set, breaking back to regain the lead and holding serve for a straight set win at No. 4, setting up Alastair Gray for the clinch at No. 2. Fearnley was active on the baseline throughout the match in one of his best singles performances since coming back from injury.
Gray seemed to be able to make every shot he wanted in a hard-fought match between ranked opponents on two. The match featured plenty of long rallies and difficult points to win, but Gray was always able to deliver the finishing blows. Whether it came from his forehand, backhand slices, backhand winners or lob shots, Gray used his full toolbox to give TCU the sweep.
