Olesen's fourth place leads TCU
PHOENIX – Facing a field that included eight of the nation's top 32 teams, TCU won the Thunderbird Collegiate by four strokes Saturday at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Horned Frogs did not shoot 20-under par like they did in the second round, but didn't have to. No. 3 Oklahoma State, which started the day just one-stroke back of TCU, shot 3-under 281 and TCU shot 4-under 280. No. 12 Arizona State had the best round of the day at 11-under 273 to move up four spots to second place.
The Horned Frogs finished 34-under 818, four ahead of the Sun Devils (-30). TCU's 34-under par was its best in two seasons and the best at the Thunderbird Collegiate since Arizona State's 41-under in 2017. The host school had won the event the last three times its been held.
Sophomore Jacob Skov Olesen led for much of the day, but bogeyed the final two holes to finish tied for fourth place with a score of 11-under 202, the best of his young career. The Denmark native had a final round score of 1-under 70 for his seventh-straight round under par. There was a three-way tie for first at 12-under 201.
Sophomore Gustav Frimodt shot even-par 71 to finish tied for 11th with a career-best score of 8-under 205.
Sophomore Mateo Fernández de Oliveira played a bogey-free round and shot 3-under 68. The Argentina native shot 7-under 206 for the tournament and finished tied for 13th. Freshman Filippo Celli tied with Fernández de Oliveira after shooting even-par 71.
The first-place finish for the Frogs should help tremendously when NCAA Regional bids are announced in May. TCU, which entered the week with a GolfStat ranking of 62, has made 30 consecutive regionals.
The Horned Frogs will be back in action April 26-28 at the Big 12 Championship, held at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
