TCU Women’s Tennis signs Jade Otway and Yu-Chin Tsai
FORT WORTH -- TCU women's tennis head coach Lee Taylor Walker has signed a pair of highly touted recruits. Jade Otway, the No. 1 junior tennis prospect in New Zealand, will be added to the 2022 spring roster while Yu-Chin Tsai, career-high ITF rank of No. 126, will join the program in the summer to begin playing in the fall of 2022.
Jade Otway | New Zealand | UTR 9.73 | Career High ITF Rank: 184
"We are thrilled Jade will join us in January," Walker said. "Beyond the results and experience at a high level, Jade has the intangibles you want in a player- intuitive, athletic, and loves to compete. We have connected well with her family and coach, and look forward to building on the great foundation they laid. Jade will have an immediate impact for us this spring as we look to return an experienced and healthy squad."
Otway won the 2021 Wellington ITF Championships this season as the No. 1 seed in the tournament. She only lost one set throughout the five-round tournament, winning the tournament final, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. She is regarded as the top junior tennis prospect in New Zealand heading into her TCU career with U18 National titles in doubles in 2019 and singles in 2020.
"Lee and I are thrilled to have Jade join the Frog Family," assistant coach Christopher Williams said. "With what we learned throughout the recruitment process it's clear Jade is going to make us immediately better. That will be in part through her character, tennis skills and competitive spirit. She also comes from a strong family and is well coached. We look forward to stewarding her career well at TCU and watching her thrive."
Yu-Chin Tsai | Taiwan | UTR 10.58 | Career High ITF Rank: 126
"Yuki has a really strong foundation and a great group of people working with her that believe in her," Walker said. "She's got a great work ethic and all the tools to be a champion. She is such a kind person as well and I know she will really gel well within our team and values."
Tsai is a proven winner on the junior circuit, reaching the semifinals of three straight junior tournaments to earn her career-best junior ranking of No. 126. She represented Taiwan in the 2019 Junior Fed Cup, played in Orlando Florida in 2019. She has won four juniors titles so far and will look to keep that winning momentum going headed into her first collegiate season, next fall.
"Lee and I are grateful to have Yuki join our program," Williams said. "She has her sights set high which matches with our program vision, and she will have an immediate positive impact beginning Fall '22. We can't wait to get her on the purple courts."
Otway is one of two newcomers, along with Helena Narmont, joining a TCU roster that returns two nationally ranked singles players (Alisa Soloveva – No. 54 & Mercedes Aristegui – No. 75) as well as 2021 All-Big 12 doubles winner Stevie Kennedy, Addy Guevara, Margaret Polk and Isabel Pascual. Tsai is TCU's first signee to the 2022-23 roster.
