FORT WORTH – TCU Volleyball had No. 6 Baylor on its heels before succumbing in five sets (26-24, 15-25, 25-18, 20-25, 11-15) in front of a record crowd (4,012) inside Schollmaier Arena on Saturday night. Taylor Raiola set a career high with 22 kills, tied for the most against Baylor in program history, in the loss.
"First, I want to thank our fans for making program history tonight," head coach Jill Kramer said. "Our marketing department did a great job promoting this match and our ticket sales department brought in a ton of groups. 4,012 fans inside Schollmaier Arena was great to see and provided a great home atmosphere to play in. It definitely helped us tonight. I'm really proud of our team for coming in and competing really hard to put together a couple of really good battles against Baylor, not just tonight but last night too. I thought our pin hitters were exceptional, Julia Adams, Taylor Raiola and Afedo Manyang took a lot of swings for us. Great performances by them. I think all-in-all we had really great performances from many people on our team. We fought hard, we believed., we hung in and we just came up a little short both nights. We need to keep battling, keep getting better every day and our team has come to the gym to do that over and over again throughout the season, we're looking forward to getting back at it on Monday."
TCU NOTABLES:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 26-24): The opening set started off with quality back-and-forth volleyball. Raiola and Adams paced the TCU offense as the Frogs matched Baylor punch for punch until the score was tied 17-17. It was then that a solo block from Hall lurched momentum behind TCU as the Frogs went on a 4-0 run, the first time either side managed more than two points in a row. Baylor chipped away to tie the score, 24-24, before a Myers kill and a BU attack error gave TCU the set. Raiola led the Frogs with five kills while senior Ashley Wehrstein led the back row with four digs. TCU hit .452 in the opening set, committing just two attack errors on 31 swings. Hall was a menace at the net, recording three blocks to lead the front row.
Set 2 (BU, 25-15): Baylor's defense bounced back in the second set as the Bears went in front, 7-0, and never looked back. Junior Audrey Nalls led the offense with three kills coming in off the bench. Manyang recorded her 150th career block in the set as well.
Set 3 (TCU, 25-18): The Horned Frogs responded with a fast start of their own in the third, using a well-balanced offense and strong service from Raiola to jump in front, 8-2. Baylor clawed back before Adams and Manyang sparked the offense with timely terminations to keep TCU in front, wire to wire. Zoe Hall recorded the final two kills of the set for TCU as the Horned Frogs claimed their second frame of the night. Hall, Raiola, Adams and Manyang combined for 15 kills, led by five from Manyang as the TCU offense hit .350 for the set thanks to 13 assists from Nichols. Bella Swafford had one of her best defensive sets of the season, racking up five digs and providing the TCU hitters with extra swings throughout play.
Set 4 (BU, 25-20): The fourth set mirrored the first, with both teams matching the other kill for kill in the early goings. Baylor's block played a key factor as the Bears made four blocks which would prove to be the difference. After Raiola tied the score, 19-19 with yet another kill, Baylor made a momentum grabbing block to go in front, 21-19, and hold on for a five-point set victory. Raiola finished with seven kills in the set on .312 hitting. Dennison and Nichols paced the back row with four digs each.
Set 5 (BU, 15-11): The Frogs battled in the final set, keeping Baylor close, 10-11, before BU won four of the final five points as 2019 AVCA Player of the Year Yossiana Pressley carried Baylor to the win. Raiola made four kills and added an ace while Dennison added two digs and an ace. TCU gave Baylor all it could handle, but the No. 6 Baylor Bears found a way to get the win.
UP NEXT:
The Horned Frogs (8-14, 2-10) go on the road for their final Big 12 conference series away from home. They will battle Kansas (12-11, 4-8) in Lawrence, Kansas, next Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
