Dani Dennison set the program digs record in a 3-2 win over OU
FORT WORTH – TCU Volleyball (7-7, 1-3) exacted its revenge on Oklahoma (8-9, 2-4) with a 3-2 reverse sweep (13-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-12) in front of the 7th largest crowd in program history (2,173) on Saturday night inside Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena. Dani Dennison set the program record for career digs, finishing the night with 1,441 over her career.
"I thought this was a really gutsy win from our team," head coach Jill Kramer said. "We had our best crowd at Schollmaier Arena and it made a huge difference for us, helping push us at the end of sets. I was most proud of our team for bouncing back after the first two sets. We showed our fight, our belief in one another, allowing us to make personnel changes and still keeping up their communication and bringing the best out of one another."
"I'm very proud of Dani's effort over the last four-plus years," Kramer said. "I'm happy for her to get to experience such a large milestone on her home court, with her team, family and friends around her. A program record is a lot of hard work, sweat and tears that people don't see. It shows up in spectacular performances on the court. I'm really happy that she can leave here when her career is over with this record. Because she worked so hard to get there. I know it's because of a lot of people around her as well. The great thing about Dani is that she knows that too. If she were to reach that milestone tonight and we wouldn't have won, she would have been heartbroken. And that's what makes her special."
TCU NOTABLES:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (OU, 25-13): Oklahoma jumped out to an. 11-4 lead and never looked back as TCU errors and OU blocking helped the Sooners cruise to a one-set lead. Freshman Zoe Hall recorded her first kills inside Schollmaier Arena but .462 hitting and seven blocks from Oklahoma made the difference.
Set 2 (OU, 25-22): The Horned Frogs made adjustments to start the second set, allowing the offense to bounce back with .300 hitting, but Oklahoma's block still caused problems as Oklahoma won five of the final seven points to claim the set by three. Cole started the set after coming off the bench in the first, racking up four kills on five swings (.800 hitting) but the offense couldn't find consistency on the outside and OU took a two-set lead.
Set 3 (TCU, 25-19): The third set looked bleak at the beginning with OU jumping in front, 9-4. But Adams settled into a groove, sending powerful attacks down the middle of the Sooner defense while the Horned Frog defense extended rallies with a strong presence at the net and hard work in the back row. Taylor Raiola established herself in the back row, coming up with five digs in the set, playing all six rotations. She led the TCU defense that managed 15 digs, setting up Adams to wreak havoc on Oklahoma in transition. Adams finished the set with 10 kills, saving her best play for the final points. The Horned Frogs went on a 7-2 run at the end of the set, turning a 17-17 tie into a six-point victory. Adams was responsible for five kills in that stretch recording the final four points of the set by herself.
Set 4 (TCU, 25-22): TCU rode the momentum generated by the crowd into the fourth, going on a 6-0 scoring run to leap in front, 20-14. Dennison served throughout the run in her first run of serves since breaking the program digs record, putting Oklahoma in difficult attacking situations, allowing for Myers to dominate the offensive attack. Myers made a kill and a block in the run, along with a pair of kills from Raiola. Myers finished the set with a team-best six kills on nine swings as Nichols distributed the ball effectively throughout the lineup. Six Horned Frogs recorded kills, including the finishing blow from Adams to force a fifth set for the third match in a row.
Set 5 (TCU, 15-12): After a string of errors in past fifth sets, the Horned Frogs came out with ruthless efficiency this time around, jumping in front 4-1 with a potent and well-balanced offensive attack. Oklahoma fought back to tie the score, 11-11, but TCU rallied once again. Cecily Bramschreiber got the run started with an ace before Cole made a solo block to put the Frogs in front, 13-11. Nichols made career-best tying fifth kill of the match to give TCU a 14-11 advantage, allowing for Manyang to clinch the win win a kill two points later. Manyang led the team with four kills in the final set while Raiola and Dennison added four digs each and TCU won its first fifth set of the season.
UP NEXT:
The Horned Frogs will hope to ride this momentum into a road series with No. 1 Texas next weekend in Austin. TCU will play Texas Thursday, Oct. 14 and Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. inside Gregory Gymnasium. Both matches will be broadcast on Longhorn Network.
