The rising senior is honored with both the Texas Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award and Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award
FORT WORTH – Senior Alastair Gray was presented with two ITA Texas Region post-season awards – the Texas Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship and Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Awards - on Monday morning, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced.
Gray finished 2020 with a career-best ranking of No. 30. He posted a 6-1 record against ranked opponents while leading TCU to a season-best No. 7 team ranking prior to the cancellation of the season. He is a three-time All-Academic Big 12 honoree and served as the team's captain for the past two seasons.
"Alastair leads by example and he's also willing to speak up when there is a need to do so," head coach David Roditi said. "He's extremely thoughtful and considerate of everybody else's individuality and perspective. Under his leadership as a captain, our team has not had one unsportsmanlike point penalty in two seasons. I find this to be a result of his leadership and his behavior on the court. He's a role model for both. I'm very happy that he is being recognized for the tremendous impact he has had and will continue to have at TCU."
The ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding student-athletes in all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) at the regional and national level. This prestigious award, which dates back to 1982, is presented to the men's and women's national and regional student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
The ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award is the ITA's longest-running award honors a Division I men's student-athlete who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academic and has had outstanding playing accomplishments. The award was established in 1969 in memory of Rafael Osuna, who was killed in a place accident at the age of 30. Osuna is one of the all-time great collegiate tennis players, winning three NCAA doubles titles and the 1962 NCAA singles title as part of a USC team that many consider to be the greatest of all time.
