TCU Women’s Tennis adds two graduate transfers to load up 2020-2021 roster
FORT WORTH -- TCU women's tennis welcomes in two highly-touted student-athletes to the 2020-2021 team as Tate Schroeder and Alisa Soloveva join the roster as graduate transfers. Both Schroeder and Soloveva have enjoyed strong collegiate careers, playing No. 1 singles for Clemson and Winthrop respectively. Experience they will hope leads to further success on the purple courts.
"We are very fortunate to welcome two incredible student-athletes to our program during this unprecedented time," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "Their records and accomplishments speak for themselves. But beyond the numbers and resumes are two genuine, honest people who have a perspective on life, school and tennis that we value and admire. They bring a great maturity to our team and put us in position to not only win championships, but fulfill our larger purpose of making a positive difference within our TCU family, Fort Worth community and global tennis world. We are well aware of the worldwide pandemic and saddened by its impact on so many people, but we are hopeful these two can get to campus soon and have the senior years they always dreamed about."
Tate Schroeder| Centennial, Colo. | 89 career wins | Clemson
Schroeder joins TCU after a standout performance in her final season at Clemson. She played No. 1 singles and doubles for the Tigers, amassing a 16-11 overall record (11-6 singles, 5-5 doubles) including the best win of her career over No. 22 Alana Smith of NC State. She finished the season ranked No. 70 in the final ITA singles polls, her highest ranking to-date.
"I've known Tate for a long time up throughout her junior tennis and collegiate career," Walker said. "When the opportunity arose to add her, I was determined to not let it slip. "Tate recovered from a knee injury last year and was playing the best tennis of her life, knocking off some of the best players in the country just days before the season came an end. Her overall outlook on tennis is very healthy and she has a level of confidence that she hasn't had in a long time. We are excited to steward her game and keep her developing and peaking this next year."
In her career, Schroeder boasts a 55-48 record in singles competition at both Clemson and Missouri, where she spent her freshman season. She graduated with honors from the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. And has proven herself to be an asset on the tennis courts.
"Lee and I are thrilled to welcome Tate to our team," assistant coach Christopher Williams said. "She seemed a great fit for TCU from the beginning of the recruiting process. Tate was clear about her goals and has clearly proven to improve her game and competitive level each year in college. We are confident because of her resiliency and our TCU culture, the best is still yet to come."
Alisa Soloveva | Chelyabinsk, Russia | 114 career wins | Winthrop
Soloveva comes to Fort Worth after a staggering career at Winthrop. She was named First-Team all-conference after each of her first three seasons, stacking up 114 career victories in all competitions. She posted a dominant 29-3 record in dual singles play at the No. 1-2 positions over her last two seasons at Winthrop resulting in a final singles ranking of No. 76 at the conclusion of the 2020 campaign.
"It didn't take long to realize why Alisa became one of the best players in the country," Walker said. "From our first phone calls with the Winthrop coaches and throughout our conversations together, her organization, focus, and determination in all aspects of her life was apparent. She's a great student, motivating teammate, and self-starter on the court. She has a fierceness and toughness that led Winthrop to a lot of success, and I have no doubt that will be the same here at TCU."
Soloveva dominated the Big South conference throughout her career, compiling a 29-1 record in singles competition, with her lone loss coming in her freshman season, back in 2017. She qualified for the NCAA tournament in singles after her sophomore season, where she reached the second round by taking down No. 56 Jaeda Daniel of Auburn in straight sets.
"Lee and I are really excited to welcome Alisa to the Frog Fam," Williams said. "She comes to us from a Winthrop program that is accustomed to winning conference championships, and she has high standards in academics and on the tennis court. Alisa has proven successful against the best players in the country and we are grateful she has chosen TCU to thrive in her extra year of eligibility. "
