Horned Frogs look to close out regular season with win
FORT WORTH – The No. 2 TCU women's rifle team will travel to El Paso and take on UTEP in its final match of the regular season on Saturday.
Last time the Horned Frogs and Miners got together in Fort Worth, TCU fired its highest mark in program history with a score of 4,732. This season, they are 4-0 against Patriot Rifle Conference teams.
Entering this weekend's matchup, the Frogs boast the nation's top aggregate average, with a mark of 4,711.7. Sophomore Kristen Hemphill and freshman Stephanie Grundsoee lead the Frogs with the third and fourth-best aggregate averages in the NCAA, respectively. Hemphill owns a 1,180.1 average on the season and has fired a score of 1,180 or better in six of her last seven matches. Grundsoee has also reached the 1,180 mark in three of her last four matches. She boasts a 1,179.8 aggregate average.
TCU is coming off its third-best smallbore performance of the year against Ole Miss as seven members of the team posted scores of 580 or better. They lead the nation with a team average of 2,336.8 and three of the top eight performers. Grundsoee leads the Frogs and ranks fifth in the country with a 585.7 average. Elizabeth Marsh owns the seventh-best mark. She is averaging a 585.0. Hemphill sits just behind her with a 584.7 average.
The Frogs rank second in the country as a team in air rifle behind Kentucky. Hemphill and Grundsoee are both among the top five individuals in the NCAA with average marks of 595.2 and 594.1, respectively. Casey Lutz is tied for the seventh spot with a 593.3. Freshman Grace Taschuk also ranks just outside the top 10. She has the 13th best average with a 592.2.
This weekend, TCU will be without Hemphill and Abigail Gordon at this weekend's match, as the sophomores are set to compete in part two of the U.S. Olympic Trails for air rifle.
UTEP is coming into the match after picking up its first win of the season over Jacksonville State, 4,610-4,602. As a team, they are averaging a 4,584.4 aggregate score this season. Mara Rouse paces the Miners in smallbore (596.25), and Jonna Warnken leads the team in air rifle (583.7).
The match is set to begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. CT.
