Bane becomes the 18th TCU player drafted
FORT WORTH – TCU graduate Desmond Bane was selected in the first round by the Boston Celtics Wednesday in the 2020 NBA Draft.
The two-time All-Big 12 Conference selection was taken by Boston in a projected trade to the Memphis Grizzlies with the 30th and final pick of the first round.
Bane became the 18th player ever drafted from TCU and the first since 1999 when Lee Nailon was selected in the second round with the 43rd overall pick to the Charlotte Hornets. Bane also became the highest draft pick by a TCU player since Kurt Thomas was selected 10th in the 1995 draft to the Miami Heat. Thomas is the only other TCU player chosen in the first round.
The only other first round draft pick coached by Jamie Dixon (as a head coach) was Steven Adams, a 12th overall selection out of Pittsburgh in 2013 by Oklahoma City.
Bane was one of three Big 12 Conference players drafted in the first round, joining Tyrese Haliburton (12, Iowa State) and Udoka Azubuike (27, Kansas). The Big 12 has had 32 first round picks in the last 10 years.
