McKenzie Nichols sets program record with 64 assists as TCU earns its first win of 2020
FORT WORTH -- TCU volleyball celebrated its first match in Schollmaier Arena in style with a 3-2 (27-25, 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 17-15) victory over Texas Tech on Thursday evening. The Horned Frogs offense was at its best in its new home, delivering the most kills in the program's history as a member of the Big 12 while sophomore setter McKenzie Nichols set a new program record in assists (64) in the victory.
"I thought this was a great way for us to start off playing in Schollmaier Arena," head coach Jill Kramer said. "We showed our faith and belief in one another to come from behind in the first and fifth sets. They trusted one another and trusted themselves to get the win. I'm proud of this team for stepping up and getting this win together."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 27-25): Texas Tech jumped in front, 9-4 early in the first set. But a block from Clark and Manyang on the right side sparked a rally and the Horned Frogs would go on a 10-4 run to take their first lead of the match, 14-13. Anytime TCU seemed in a bind, Manyang stepped up, providing timely terminations on the right side to keep the Horned Frogs in the thick of things. The lead changed hands four more times after that and both teams found themselves in a 25-25 deuce, the 11th tie score of the match. But another Clark and Manyang block led to a Manyang's first service ace since September of last season and the Horned Frogs claimed the first set victory. Manyang led the team with six kills in the opening set, on .500 hitting to go along with two kills and the set-clinching ace. Dennison was strong on the back row, leading the way with four digs while Nichols notched eight assists.
Set 2 (TTU, 23-25): The second set was another hotly contested affair. The score was tied at 11-11 before Tech went on a 6-1 run to open things up. TCU fought off two set points to force a 24-23 score line but the Red Raiders found a kill to salt away the set. Nichols did a wonderful job of spreading the ball around as four Horned Frogs registered three or more kills (Schirpik, Clark, Manyang and Clark) with Clark leading the pack with four of her own. Dennison held the back row down with five digs.
Set 3 (TTU, 21-25): Once again, the set was as close as it could be, both teams went on runs but neither squad could manage a lead over three points. The score was tied, 20-20 before Tech would find five of the next six points to push TCU to the brink. Manyang, once again, led the offensive effort with five kills to go along with four from Adams and three from Clark, but it wasn't enough to escape with the set.
Set 4 (TCU, 25-17): With their backs against the wall, TCU came out firing for the fourth set, claiming the most lopsided effort of the night in the form of an eight-point win. The Horned Frogs jumped in front, 6-2, and carried that momentum toward an 18-10 lead which they would nurse all the way through the end of the set. Adams and Manyang took over on offense, posting six kills each, Manyang doing so on just seven swings (.714 hitting). Nichols finished the set with an astounding 18 assists on TCU's 19 kills. The Horned Frogs posted a sideout percentage of 82 percent in the fourth set, thanks to the impeccable play of Dennson (seven digs) and Berklie Baker (five digs). TCU hit .385 as a team this set, its best of the night.
Set 5 (TCU, 17-15): The fifth set was shaky at the start with Texas Tech jumping in front, 10-7 but Adams would have none of it, delivering four kills over the next seven points to put TCU in front 13-11. Texas Tech came back to tie it at 13 before Adams again set the record straight with a kill to restore the lead, 14-13. For the second time in the match the teams found themselves at deuce, 15-15, and for the second time in the match, Manyang would play a part in the next two points to win it for the Horned Frogs. This time, it was a pair of kills on the right side that gave TCU the next two points, the fifth set and its first victory of the 2020 season. Adams led the team with six kills in the fifth set to go along with Manyang's four and two from Schirpik. Dennison was at her best, delivering six digs. TCU earned every one of its points in the final set, finishing with 13 kills and 13 digs.
