TCU sets season-bests in digs and blocks in five-set defeat

FORT WORTH -- TCU volleyball couldn't get the points it needed on Thursday night, dropping a five-set match to West Virginia (18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 22-25 ,11-15) in Morgantown, West Virginia.

"Our team battled back from a very slow start to the match." head coach Jill Kramer said. "I saw a lot of good things from our squad tonight. We've made some big improvements on the blocking and defensive side of the ball. We're looking forward to competing again tomorrow."

TCU NOTABLES:

TCU set season bests in digs (71) and blocks (10.0) as a team tonight.
Junior DS/L Ashley Wehrstein set a new career high with 12 digs.
Sophomore MyKayla Myers set a career high with 6.0 blocks. She has now posted 11 blocks in her last two matches (1.22/set).
Myers also matched her career-best in kills (8) while setting a new career-high in hitting percentage (.438)
Sophomore Julia Adams led the team in kills for the second time this season, delivering 21.
It was her second 20+ kill match of the year and third of her career.
Senior Dani Dennison tied her season-best with 24 digs tonight. She is averaging 4.79 digs/set over her last three matches.
Sophomore Audrey Nalls made her 2020 debut tonight, posting nine kills, eight digs and three blocks in a strong effort all-around.
Sophomore Afedo Manyang finished with 12 kills for her third-consecutive double-digit kill performance. This after just one match with 10+ kills last season.
Sophomore McKenzie Nichols finished with 49 assists, her second 40+ assist match this season and the 12^th of her career.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (WVU, 18-25): West Virginia got off to a hot start, claiming a 10-2 lead off the bat. The Horned Frogs found their footing and played the rest of the set to their advantage, 16-15, but the early lead held out and WVU secured the opening frame. MyKayla Myers was a rock up the middle, steadying things for her squad with four kills on five swings. She led the team in kills while Ashley Wehrstein led things on the defensive end, with six digs.

Set 2 (TCU, 25-18): The Horned Frogs defense took center stage in the second set as TCU seized momentum with five blocks from the front row. Anytime WVU seemed to be mounting a run, Swanson, Myers, Adams or Nalls would have their hands at the net ready to reclaim points with authority. Nalls and Swanson led the effort in the set with three blocks each. The offense was spread around well as six Horned Frogs contributed 15 kills. Manyang led the group with four.

Set 3 (TCU, 25-18): Another block from Manyang and Myers sparked an 8-2 TCU run to put the Frogs in front, 11-5. WVU managed to get the set within two points but Adams came alive to help surge TCU into the lead for good. Adams finished with seven kills on .300 hitting while Dennison claimed six kills in the back row to put TCU in front two sets to one.

Set 4 (WVU, 22-25): The fourth set was as tied, 17-17 before a 4-0 WVU run but TCU behind. Dennison was a hero on defense throughout the set, finishing with nine digs and Adams added five more kills but it wouldn't be enough to put the match away.

Set 5 (WVU, 11-15): West Virginia claimed an early 6-4 lead and TCU couldn't break through. WVU hit .467 to take the set and the match. Adams added five more kills to bring her five set total to 21.
