Marsh Crowned Individual Champion
FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU Rifle team claimed the 2019 Smallbore National Championship and Elizabeth Marsh took home the individual National Title on the first day of competition in Morgantown, W.Va.
This marked the second Smallbore National Championship in program history (2013, 2019). Marsh etched her name into the history books, joining Sarah Scherer (2010 and 2012 smallbore champion) as the only Horned Frogs to take home an individual title.
Marsh's title was not without drama. Heading into the standing portion of the finals, she trailed by 3.5 points. With just two shots remaining in the finals, Akron's Andre Gross held a 0.5 point lead over Marsh. The sophomore fired shots of 10.2 and 10.6 to steal the championship, topping Gross 456.9-454.8.
Freshman Kristen Hemphill also competed in the smallbore finals. She placed fourth overall with a score of 433.7 after being eliminated on the 43rdshot out of 45 total.
In qualifying, Marsh paced the Frogs and the field with a score of 588. Teammates Hemphill and Rachel Garner both followed, firing scores of 584 and 583, respectively. Casey Lutz contributed a 576 to the team's score while Angeline Henry shot a 574.
Following the conclusion of the second smallbore relay the Frogs were tied with the Mountaineers with both teams firing identical scores of 2,331. The tiebreaker was determined based on center shots where TCU held a 127-112 advantage.
TCU will aim to take home its third overall team title when it returns for Day 2 of competition on Saturday. The Horned Frogs currently sit in the lead with a score of 2,331 followed by West Virginia (2,331) and Kentucky (2,322).
