Horned Frogs seeking third team championship
FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU Rifle team is off to Morgantown, W.Va. as it is set to take part in its 13th consecutive NCAA Championships. The Horned Frogs will be seeking for their third national title in school history.
Traveling to Morgantown for the National Championships will be senior Rachel Garner, junior Casey Lutz, sophomore Elizabeth Marsh and freshmen Kristen Hemphill and Angeline Henry.
TCU enters the championship coming off a 4,711-4,702 victory over Air Force in the NCAA Qualifier. This season TCU has posted the second-best average team score with a 4,700.7. Additionally, they have the top air rifle average in the nation (2,375.5) and the fifth best smallbore average (2,325.2).
Garner (4th, 1,178, Marsh (8th, 1,173) and Lutz(9th, 1,173) rank in the top 10 nationally in aggregate score. Lutz also paces TCU in air rifle and ranks second nationally with a 595 average, while Garner is the Frogs' top smallbore shooter with a 584 average, a mark that ranks fifth nationally.
This year's field features Air Force, Alaska Fairbanks, Army, Kentucky, Murray State, Navy and West Virginia. The event hosted by the Mountaineers will take place in WVU Coliseum.
The overall team champion will be determined by combining the smallbore and air rifle team total scores into one aggregate score for each institution. Individual champions will also be crowned for both disciplines.
Last season the Frogs finished third overall at the National Championships. They won the national title in both 2010 and 2012 under head coach Karen Monez, as well as the Air Rifle National Championship in both 2010 and 2012. In 2013, the squad took home their first-ever Smallbore National Championship. Sarah Scherer is the only Horned Frog to take home an individual title, doing so in smallbore in 2010 and 2012.
