TCU Pushes Win Streak to Seven
3/16/2019 8:26:00 PM | Men's Tennis
The Horned Frogs took both wins in their doubleheader on Saturday.
FORT WORTH, Texas – A five-match home stand began with two victories for the No. 12 TCU men's tennis team as the Horned Frogs pushed their win streak to seven by topping Pepperdine, 6-1, and LMU, 6-0, on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
TCU (12-3) got off to a slow start against the Waves (3-6) as the team had to battle back to get the doubles point. The freshman pair of Luc Fomba and Sander Jong stepped up to get the 6-4 victory on court two before Alastair Gray and Eduardo Roldan paired up for only the second time this season to get a 6-4 win on court three to secure the early lead. The Frogs stepped it up in singles action by taking the opening sets on five of the six courts. No. 7 Alex Rybkaov put the next point on the board as No. 86 Bertus Kruger and Fomba closed out their matches on courts three and four, respectively, to secure the win.
The match against LMU (2-8) was a different tale as TCU was nearly unstoppable from the very first point. The Frogs cruised to the doubles point as the No 18 pair of Kruger and Reese Stalder got things started with a 6-1 victory on the top court. The No. 56 pair of Rybakov and Gray finished off the point on court two as they grabbed the 6-2 victory. Singles action was once again all TCU as they dominated all six courts in the first set. No. 26 Gray got his fifth straight victory on court two, before Jong cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win of his own on court six. Rybakov was able to finish it off and clinch the match with his third win of the day and fifth straight singles victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 125 Lukas Moenter to improve to 16-1 on the season.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"Playing double headers are not easy and it requires our team to be focus and prepared. I felt we got off to a undisciplined start in doubles and Pepperdine did a great job of taking it to us. They had more energy than we did and we were fortunate to come back and win the point. Our team did a much better job in singles from the start and we were able to get a few quick points. Getting the fourth point was tough but (Luc) Fomba played a very good tie breaker to finish out his match.
"Sometimes when you play a double-header it helps the players be grooved for the second match and that's exactly what happened. The team played very focused from the first point of the doubles until the last point of singles. Now we will rest for a day, spend some time with our local ladies league tomorrow and then we will get ready for a huge match against another top 10 opponent in Columbia on Wednesday night. We hope all our fans will come support us."
