Bane led the Frogs with 16 points
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - TCU could not hold on to a 12-point first-half lead and lost to No. 15 ranked and top-seeded Kansas State, 70-61, in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Thursday at Sprint Center.
Junior Desmond Bane scored 13 of his team-high 16 points in the second half. Senior Alex Robinson had a well-rounded game with 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while playing all 40 minutes.
TCU (20-13) led the entire first half and as many as 12, 23-11 with 9:04 to play after two free throws by Kendric Davis. The Frogs' lead dwindled down to one, but hung on to take a 34-32 lead at halftime. A big difference in the first half was at the free throw line where TCU was 9-of-13 and KSU (25-7) was 0-of-2.
Just over five minutes into the second half, KSU took its first lead of the game, 42-39, on a three by Kamau Stokes, part of an 10-0 run by the Wildcats. The KSU run escalated to 17-2 as the Wildcats took a 51-41 lead with 11 minutes to play. Behind seven-straight points by Bane, TCU got to within three points, 55-52, with 5:43 to play.
KSU went on an 8-2 run to push its lead back to nine. However, the Frogs kept pace by making seven of eight field goal attempts, including a Bane layup, which brought the Frogs to within three points, 63-60, with 1:28 to play. TCU missed its final two shots and committed its 18th turnover of the game as the Wildcats closed the game on a 7-1 run.
In the second half, KSU shot 10-of-13 from the free throw line while TCU was 1-of-2.
