TCU will take part in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship from Feb. 15-18.
CHICAGO, Ill. – For the 14th time in program history and first time since 2016, the No. 15 TCU men's tennis team will take part in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship from Feb. 15-18 at the Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago, Ill.
Sixteen of the top Division 1 men's tennis teams will meet up for a chance to take the title at the lone team-based ITA National title this year. The Horned Frogs (4-2) are the 15th seed in the tournament and will open the competition by facing the No. 2 seed, Mississippi State (6-0), on Friday at 9 a.m. TCU is one of three Big 12 teams that will take part in the championship with No. 5 seed Texas and No. 10 seed Baylor also on hand.
TCU Notables
TCU went 1-1 leading up to the competition this weekend with a 6-0 victory over Wichita State and then a 4-3 heartbreaking loss to No. 4 Florida last weekend. The Frogs now sit at 4-2 on the season and are ranked No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA team poll.
Senior Alex Rybakov moved up to No. 8 in the singles poll with an 11-1 mark with five wins over ranked opponents. Alastair Gray earned his first singles ranking of the year as he sits at No. 75 with a 7-1 mark, while Bertus Kruger checks in at No. 83 with a team-best 13 wins on the season and three wins over ranked opponents. Kruger is also ranked No. 48 in the doubles poll with Reese Stalder with the duo posting six wins so far this year.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Mississippi State is undefeated on the year at 6-0 and sits at No. 3 in the Oracle/ITA rankings. At the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the Bulldogs opened with a sweep of Wichita State before downing Arizona, 4-1, to advance to the indoor championship. Since then, Mississippi State has scored wins over Miami (4-1), South Florida (6-1), Texas Tech (4-2) and Tulane (4-1). Nuno Borges leads the Bulldogs with a No. 5 ranking and a 5-0 mark at the No. 1 spot with wins in his last six matches. Three other players are ranked in the singles poll starting with Niclas Braun at No. 64 followed by No. 66 Giovanni Oradini and No. 98 Trevor Foshey. Mississippi State has won the doubles point in all six matches played with Braun and Oradini leading the way with a No. 6 ranking and a 4-0 mark at the No. 2 position.
All-Time Series Records
Friday's match will be the sixth meeting all-time between TCU and Mississippi State with the Bulldogs holding the slight advantage at 3-2 in the series record. Mississippi State has won the last three matches with the last meeting coming in 2012 as the Bulldogs got the 4-1 win in Starkville. Friday's match will be the fourth time playing on a neutral site with TCU holding the 2-1 advantage.
