KANSAS CITY – Messiah Bright scored both goals as TCU rallied to defeat No. 13 Texas Tech 2-1 on Friday night at Swope Soccer Village. The victory propels the Horned Frogs into the Big 12 Championship game for the third time in the last four seasons.
The Rundown
Just 53 seconds into the game, Texas Tech grabbed a 1-0 lead. Emily Alvarado made the leaping save on the initial shot, but Jordie Harr was there to clean up the rebound and give the Red Raiders the lead.
TCU weathered the storm and eventually turned the field in its favor. The hard work paid off in the 39th minute when Yazmeen Ryan found Messiah Bright inside the six yard box. She lost her defender and deflected the game-tying goal just inside the near post. Minutes later, Alvarado made a diving stop to keep the game level at one heading to halftime.
The Horned Frogs came out charging in the second half and controlled much of the play. A strong defensive play from Payton Crews earned TCU a throw in. That translated into what would stand up as the game-winning goal. Tara Smith carried the ball into the attacking zone. Her passing attempt deflected off a Red Raider and found Bright. She shocked everyone with a string from an odd angle. Her shot sailed in high on the back post in the 67th minute for a 2-1 lead.
Texas Tech didn't go quietly, generating numerous chances in the final five minutes, but the back line stood strong, blocking shot attempts and limiting the shots seen by Alvarado. She finished the match with six saves, four of which came in the second half.
Stat of the Game

Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell
On the game:
"We responded in kind, in a way that mature teams do. You are looking for moments like that to kind of change the course of the season. Our kids stepped up, battled and created situations. Then you have the beast that was in beast-mode take care of it and give us two goals. I can't be more more of our group or more happy for our group."
On the falling behind and coming back:
"Those past experiences are huge. If you've already done it, then you know you can do it again. I think our team believes we can beat anybody and I believe we can beat anybody too. We are going to get ready for Sunday and do our best to win a championship."
On the back line of Chaylyn Hubbard, Payton Crews, Brandi Peterson and Tatum Condrey:
"Like I said to the group, they are blocking shots and heading balls out. They are clearing balls out. Emily is making big time saves. They are all sophomores! It's unbelievable. It's nice to see and the future is bright, but I'm going to live in the present, enjoy it and get ready for Kansas."
