The 2019 Big 12 Freshman of the Year notched 10 wins playing on the ITF circuit this summer
FORT WORTH -- The 2019 women's tennis landscape shifted last season with the arrival of Ellie Douglas. The McKinney, Texas native joined TCU in the spring season and quickly established herself as the No. 1 singles player. She claimed 11 singles wins – five vs. ranked opponents – on her way to a No. 49 ranking, an NCAA tournament berth and the Big 12 Freshman of the Year award.
Since the end of the 2019 spring season, Douglas has showcased her talents on the ITF tour, taking on premier competition, as an amateur, in one of the world's most prestigious environments in the sport.
Douglas has played in eight ITF tournaments across the United States thus far, racking up 10 singles wins and a quarterfinal appearance. She boasts three wins over Top 500 opponents and is currently ranked No. 645 in the world.
Some notable accomplishments this summer include a quarterfinal appearance at the Redding 25k in Redding, Calif. After earning a spot in the main draw through qualifying, Douglas dispatched of No. 382 Quinn Gleason in the opening round. Gleason was a two-time All-ACC player at Notre Dame from 2013-2016 and a four-time champion on the ITF tour. Gleason took the first set off Douglas, 2-6, before Douglas found her rhythm and took down the three-time NCAA singles qualifier in three sets: 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In the round of 16, Douglas continued her momentum, ousting the veteran Alexa Glatch (No. 433). Glatch retired in the first set after Douglas jumped out to a 6-5 lead. Glatch is a 10-time singles champion on the ITF tour and holds a career-best singles ranking of No. 102 in the world.
In her most recent tournament, Douglas defeated No. 489 Olivia Tjandramulia in three sets at 60k Templeton qualifying in Templeton, Calif. Once again, Douglas dropped the opening set, but showcased her tremendous mental fortitude Horned Frog fans know so well to come from behind and win the match, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 [10-6].
Other significant victories from Douglas this summer include a three-set slugfest with 2018 NCAA Singles champion and SEC player of the year Arianne Hartono (Ole Miss) on the purple courts. Playing in the Fort Worth Pro Women's Tennis Classic, hosted by TCU, Douglas battled her way past one of the best collegiate players in recent history, taking down Hartono, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
The week prior, in Evansville, Indiana, Douglas outdueled 2019 NCAA Singles quarterfinalist and ITA No. 9 Jada Hart in straight sets, 7-6(5), 7-5. She battled 2019 All-American Fernanda Contreras (Vanderbilt '19) to three sets in the following match but came up just short, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
Douglas is preparing to play in the main draw of the Oracle Pro Series 25k tournament in Claremont, Calif. this week. Come back to gofrogs.com at the beginning of next month to keep up with her progress on tour.
