TCU hits record-breaking 48 kills in dominant three-set win over WVU
FORT WORTH – The TCU offensive arsenal was on full display in Thursday evening's 3-0 victory over West Virginia inside The Rickel. Five different Horned Frogs secured six or more kills as TCU hit a season-best 48 kills in three sets (16 kills/set) in an impressive home sweep of WVU: 25-23, 25-22, 25-21. It was the most kills in a three-set Big 12 match in program history.
"I was really proud of the way our team came into today," head coach Jill Kramer said. "We've worked really hard this week. Our season hasn't been what we wanted it to be, but the fortitude that our team has shown through it has been really impressive. I'm really proud of the team for bringing what we did in practice into the match tonight and really executing the game plan well. Our first ball contacts opened up our offense and let Kenzie set anyone a majority of the time."
TCU NOTABLES:
Set 1 (TCU, 25-23): An early 7-1 Horned Frog run, fueled by kills from McCall and sophomore right side Katie Clark, gave TCU an 11-7 advantage. WVU would manage to tie the score multiple times afterwards, even taking the lead late, 21-20. But a timely kill from Waggle allowed TCU to win five of the final seven points and jump in front, 1-0. McCall was phenomenal in the early going, posting a team-best five kills on .571 hitting, setting the tone for a record-breaking offensive evening. Seven different Horned Frogs recorded kills in the opening set as Nichols distributed the ball efficiently. TCU hit .357 with 14 kills to open the match.
Set 2 (TCU, 25-22): West Virginia countered in the second, claiming a 15-14 advantage before a block from Manyang and McCall shifted momentum in TCU's favor. The block tied the match at 15-15 and spurred three consecutive TCU kills, two from Manyang and another from Waggle. WVU once again managed to take a 21-20 lead late, but this time it was McCall who stepped up and delivered two late kills to push TCU over the edge and win five of the final six points. Manyang and Waggle led the team with five kills each in the set, Manyang doing so on .667 hitting on top of her two blocks.
Set 3 (TCU, 25-21): With their backs against the wall, the Mountaineers once more managed to lead early in the set, 9-6. But for every WVU run, TCU's balanced attack had an answer. Waggle added another kill before Nalls threw down back-to-back terminations to tie the score, 10-10. WVU tied things back at 16-16 later on but a 6-1 TCU run would put the Horned Frogs ahead for good. McCall delivered two kills in the run along with two blocks from Nalls and Clark, both of whom added a kill in the run, as TCU claimed a 22-17 lead. The final blow was delivered by Waggle as TCU claimed its first Big 12 sweep of the season. Nalls turned it on in the third set, leading the team with six kills on .333 hitting. As a team, TCU hit 18 kills, tied for the third most its hit in a set this season.
