The Horned Frogs picked up the 4-0 victory to open the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
FORT WORTH, Texas – After a close doubles contest, the No. 22 TCU men's tennis team picked up steam in singles action and were able to come away with a 4-0 victory over LMU to open the 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs (1-1) took the first win of the match as Alex Rybakov and Alastair Gray paired up for a 6-2 victory on court one. The Lions (0-2) responded with a 6-3 win of their own on court two, but an early break by the pair of freshmen on court three, Luc Fomba and Sander Jong, proved to be enough as they closed out the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
Close first sets in singles action swung in TCU's favor as the Frogs took the opening sets on all six courts. Reese Stalder quickly closed out his match on court three, 6-0, 6-2, to put TCU up 2-0 in the match. Fomba followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court five before No. 65 Bertus Kruger finished the overall team victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win on court four.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"We got our first win of the season today and it is nice to win in our home opener. We had a nice crowd and it was nice to see some fans into the match. It has been a long time since we have played. We are very thankful and very excited to get the season started here at TCU and it was such a beautiful day.
"In regards to the match, I was very pleased with our No. 3 doubles team who got their first win and it came at a crucial time. If LMU had won, it would have given them some momentum we didn't need them to have. I am proud of our No. 3 team for holding onto the lead and closing it out. In singles, every first set except for one could have gone either way and I thought we did a great job of coming back in sets on courts two, four, five and six. That is what it is going to take for us to have a good season is to be able to tough out tough moments and pressure moments and come out on the right end of those. I am pleased for that and I am pleased for Luc (Fomba) and Bertus (Kruger) to be able to close out the match like that. Tomorrow will be a tough match in either team that we play so hopefully we can get all the help we can get and have our fans come out and support us."
