LUBBOCK, Texas – TCU track and field concluded competition at the Texas Tech Classic on Saturday. The women's team led the way on day two of the meet, highlighted by season-bests and an event win.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
In her TCU debut in the long jump, Destiny Longmire finished fourth with a jump of 6.11m (20-0.5), the No.2 ranked jump in the Big 12. The San Jose State transfer was an All-American in the long jump last season.
The women's 4x400 relay improved its season mark on Saturday. Lily Beckford, Kiana Banks, Kayla Heard, and Kennedy Crawford ran 3:38.68 and finished fifth. Their time ranks fourth in the conference.
Brooklin Klopf also improved her season mark in the women's shot-put, finishing sixth with a throw of 14.22m (46-8).
A pair of distance runners competed well on Saturday. Kirsten Johnston was the top collegiate finisher in the women's 3,000m, while Evelyn Mandel battled to a second-place finish in the women's mile.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"This was a very competitive meet," head track and field coach Darryl Anderson said. "I think today, we were tired from the first day. We've been bogged down with the weather when it comes to our training, but at the end of the day, we've been through this before. We'll take the next couple of weeks and if the weather cooperates, we'll be fine. We have the people. On the men's side, we have almost all of the same pieces we had last year. When you look at our 4x4, we ran 3:04 last year and that same group ran 3:07 last week. We just need better weather to properly train, get back to that level, and elapse that.
"On the women's side, we have more talent, but we're young and need to be able to train. Our team will be fine when we can get consecutive weeks of proper training. Beyond that, overall, I thought everyone competed as well as they could. We used this meet as a two-day training session, and unfortunately, a few people got dinged up. I feel very comfortable we're going to be fine though.
"The women's team is taking good steps. The girls ran better in the mile relay, and Lily had a really good leg in that. The 60m girls were solid yesterday, Brooklin had a season-best in the shot put, and Destiny, jumping 20 feet, is a national-level athlete."
UP NEXT
The Horned Frogs return to action next weekend at the Charlie Thomas Invitational hosted by Texas A&M. The meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, February 1-2.
