Eight Frogs shoot season-high scores
FORT WORTH – The TCU rifle team won their first road contest of the 2018-19 season. The Horned Frogs fired a season-high 4,711 to finish first among four teams, topping No. 10 Navy and the VMI men's and women's squad.
The second ranked Horned Frogs turned in the best team score in both disciplines, shooting a 2,332 in smallbore and a 2,379 in air rifle. The air rifle score was tied for eighth best in program history, while the smallbore score was the highest this season.
TCU finished with the top three aggregate shooters in the match. Rachel Garner led the field for the second straight week, matching last week's score of 1,186. Casey Lutz finished in second with a season-high aggregate of 1,181 followed by freshman Kristen Hemphill with a career-high of 1,173.
The Frogs dominated the smallbore field with five of the top six scores, led by Garner's 587. Lutz fired a season-high 584 to take home second place, while Hemphill followed with a career-high 582. Catherine Miller shot a season-and-career-high 580, good for fourth. Freshman Angeline Henry finished sixth with a 579.
TCU turned in seven of the top ten air rifle scores. Garner led the way shooting a 599 for the second consecutive week, while Lutz once again finished with a score of 597. Marsh and freshman Abby Gordon both shot a score of 592. Gordon's mark was a career-high. Hemphill (591), Henry (590) and Miller (589) all rounded out the top ten in the air rifle discipline.
While not factoring in the team score, Noelle Christensen shot a season-and-career-high 582 in air rifle. Taylor Haffner also shot a career-high 588 in air rifle and finished with a career-high 1,153 aggregate score.
Navy finished second in the match with a team score of 4,664 (2,304 in smallbore and 2,360 in air rifle), the VMI men finished third with a score of 4,470 (2,207 in smallbore and 2,263 in air rifle), and the VMI women's squad rounded out the competition with a 4,389 (2,155 in smallbore and 2,234 in air rifle). Kestrel Kuhne (1,172 aggregate) was the top shooter for Navy, while VMI was paced by Jacob Hunter (1,121 aggregate).
The Horned Frogs have now shot the top two aggregate scores in the Nation this season.
