Frogs dominate smallbore
FORT WORTH – The TCU women's rifle team shot the first of two matches against Coast Guard, defeating the Bears by a score of 4,703 to 4,483.
The Horned Frogs fired a 2,334 in smallbore and a 2,369 in air rifle. Their mark in smallbore was a season-high.
Individually, TCU finished with the top nine aggregate scorers. Elizabeth Marsh led the way with a season-high aggregate score of 1,180. She was followed by freshman Kristen Hemphill who also shot a season-high aggregate score of 1,177. Rachel Garner (1,176), Angeline Henry (1,168), Casey Lutz (1,168) and Catherine Miller (1,164) rounded out the scoring for Frogs counters.
The Frogs dominated the smallbore field with the top ten shooters. Marsh tied her career-high and shot the highest score on the team this season with a 589. Hemphill had a solid performance, shooting a career-high score of 587 to finish second. Garner, Miller, Henry and Lutz followed with scores of 583, 576, 575 and 573, respectively.
In air rifle, TCU turned in nine of the top ten scores. Lutz paced the Frogs, shooting a score of 595. Garner and Henry were close behind, both finishing with a score of 593. The score also marked a career-high for Henry. Marsh finished fourth shooting a score of 591 followed by Hemphill with a 590. Catherine Miller wrapped up the scoring for the counters with a 588.
Not factoring into the team score, Abby Gordon shot a career-high aggregate score of 1,167 (573 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle), good for sixth place overall. Freshman Taylor Haffner also finished with a career- high aggregate score of 1,156 (573 in smallbore and 583 in air rifle).
Coast Guard shot a score of 2,232 in smallbore and 2,273 in air rifle. They were led by Seth Strayer and Hunter Blankenship in smallbore (564) and Bryce Sturtz in air rifle (579).
The Horned Frogs will return to shoot a second match against the Bears Sunday at 8:15 a.m. CDT.
