Frogs look to continue strong start
FORT WORTH – The TCU Rifle team returns home for a pair of matches against Coast Guard on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday's match will mark the beginning of the 2018-19 season for Coast Guard, while the Horned Frogs are coming off a strong performance at Navy where they shot a season-high and NCAA-best score of 4,711.
TCU leads the nation with an aggregate average of 4,709.5 and has turned in the top two aggregate marks in the nation this season. The second-ranked Horned Frogs also have the top average mark in smallbore (2,329.5) and air rifle (2,380).
The Frogs feature two of the top four aggregate shooters in the NCAA. Senior Rachel Garner is blowing away the field with the top average aggregate score of 1,186, seven points higher than second place. Junior Casey Lutz sits in fourth with an average score of 1,178.
TCU boasts two of the top three shooters in air rifle. Garner has been on the verge of perfection the past two weekends. She has shot a score of 599 in both matches, which leads the nation this season and is tied for the fourth best air rifle score in TCU Rifle program history. Lutz has also been very consistent, shooting a score of 597 in both matches. Elizabeth Marsh is tied for seventh in the NCAA with a 593 average in air rifle.
In smallbore, Garner ranks third the nation with a 587 average. Lutz and freshman Kristen Hemphill are tied for 12th with a 582 average, while Angeline Henry and Rachel Kimbell are tied for 16th in the NCAA with an average score of 580.
TCU last faced off against Coast Guard last season. The Frogs defeated Coast Guard by a score of 4,716-4,540.
Both matches are slated to begin around 8:15 a.m. CT.
