Three Horned Frogs competed in singles over the weekend in the first fall tournament.
FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women's tennis team completed its first fall weekend by hosting the Big 5 Challenge at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth with three players seeing action in singles.
Stevie Kennedy and newcomer Chloe Hule each posted two wins over the weekend while freshman Kate Paulus scored her first collegiate victory. Kennedy rebounded from her first two matches to end the weekend on a two-match winning streak. The sophomore picked up a three-set win over Talya Zandberg of Arizona before completing the weekend for a straight-set win over Julia Deming of Kansas.
Paulus also ended the weekend with a win as the freshman was able to get the 6-1, 6-2 win over Gitte Heynemans of Arizona. Hule began the tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Taylor Gruber of Missouri and then ended the tournament with a 6-1, 6-7(4), 10-7 over Csenge Furak of Arizona.
Quotes from the Weekend
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"I am grateful to all our staff who helped make the second annual Big 5 Challenge a success despite the rain and challenges with weather. It was great to be able to get in as many matches as we were with all the rain we had and it was a very positive experience for all 13 teams involved. A big thank you to all the visiting teams for being so patient and flexible with all the schedule changes. We want this tournament to keep continuing to improve and be a premier event in college tennis. Some of our special occasions were jeopardized due to rain, but we learn each year how to be more prepared for the next year.
"We had some really quality competition all weekend and I think everyone got better, which is what you want in the fall. Kate (Paulus), Chloe (Hule) and Stevie (Kennedy) all competed hard and learned a lot over the weekend. For it being Kate and Chloe's first competition for TCU, I was really impressed with their ability to learn and apply things within the course of the match and execute under pressure. We have some injuries we are dealing with and some nagging pains. If we can get healthy and take our fitness level up a level over the next few weeks, I like our chances at capturing the ITA Regional Championship in October. But we have to start that process this week and really look at each individuals' needs."
