TCU Rifle hosts a top-three showdown
FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU Horned Frogs welcome the No. 2 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers to town for a top-three matchup.
Both teams come into the match undefeated. The No. 3 ranked Horned Frogs have won their past 12 regular season matches and haven't lost in Fort Worth since Feb. 20, 2016. Entering this weekend TCU is 17-0 at home when shooting a score of 4,700 or better and 43-6 when hosting since the 2009-10 season.
TCU currently boasts the second-best aggregate average (4700.7) in the country behind West Virginia. The Frogs lead the nation in air rifle average at 2,374.7. They also rank fifth overall in smallbore average with a 2,326.
The Frogs are led by three of the top eight shooters in the NCAA. Rachel Garner ranks second nationally with a 1,183.1 aggregate average followed by Elizabeth Marsh in fifth with a 1,175.9 and Casey Lutz in eighth with a 1,174.1. West Virginia is paced by Ginny Thrasher, who sits in third with a 1,180.5 average.
In smallbore, TCU has the second- and eighth-ranked performers in the nation. Garner owns the second-best mark in the country with a 586.6 average, while Marsh is currently averaging a score of 583.6. In their last two matches, Garner and Lutz have both posted season-high scores of 589, tied for the second-best mark in the NCAA this season. WVU is led by Morgan Phillips with an average of 586.3.
The Frogs have dominated the air rifle discipline on the season with three of the top 11 shooters in the country. Garner ranks second in the nation with a 596.5 average. Lutz sits in fifth with a 595.6 followed by Marsh with a 592.33. TCU has recorded three of the top five team air rifle scores in the NCAA this season. Millica Babic owns the top average score for the Mountaineers with a 595.8 (3rd).
TCU last faced off against West Virginia last season in Morgantown where they dropped the match, despite shooting a solid score, by a score of 4,727-4,717.
