FORT WORTH, Texas - A complete performance across doubles and singles by the No. 9 TCU men's tennis team gave the Horned Frogs its 10th straight victory and fourth sweep with a 4-0 win over No. 44 Texas Tech on Thursday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Frogs (15-4, 3-0 Big 12) remain the only team in the Big 12 with an unblemished mark in conference action as they picked up the doubles point against the Red Raiders (10-13, 0-3 Big 12) before cruising to three singles victories. Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson continued their undefeated streak as the duo opened the match with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 position. No. 59 Reese Stalder and Jerry Lopez scored one of their biggest wins of the season as they clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over the No. 12 pair of Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson at the top spot.
In singles action, TCU picked up the win in the first set on five of the six courts. Johnson, who played in only his second singles match this spring, put the Frogs up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win on court six. No. 3 Norrie followed and was nearly unstoppable at the top position with a 6-0, 6-1 win against No. 33 Jolan Cailleau for his 14th win this season and 12th over a ranked opponent. Stalder wrapped up the victory with his own commanding victory as he scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ryry Hyrkkonen on court five.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"I am happy that we won today. To beat a team like Texas Tech and the way we did says a lot about the way we are playing. We can't let that score fool us with the fact that we got away with some really bad performances in doubles in some spots and in singles. For us to accomplish the things we want to accomplish, we need all nine points to be ready to go and compete. We can't have any kinks in the chain or it is going to cost us.
"We have five days to get ready for a really competitive and tough team at Baylor. It doesn't get any tougher than playing Baylor at Baylor. We have been there before and we know what to expect. We will be ready for it. We have to come up with a better mindset than we had today. I thought the key today even though it seemed very lopsided was that we must have won 90 percent of the deuce points especially at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. We won so many deuce points and that really made the score seem so lopsided. It is also a good sign for us that we are winning at the bottom of the lineup. That is something that we didn't have earlier this season. That is a great sign that we are getting healthier and the guys are getting better. Some of the tough circumstances and some of the challenges that we faced earlier this year seem to be helping us in those tough moments. We will continue to do the things that we are doing but the key is to get better. We have to keep getting better."
