TCU Stumbles to No. 19 Kansas
3/10/2017 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 22 TCU women's tennis team suffered its first Big 12 Conference loss of the season as No. 19 Kansas took a 4-1 win over the Horned Frogs on Friday night at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kan.
Forced indoors due to weather, the Frogs (7-5, 0-1 Big 12) faltered to open the match as the Jayhawks (7-3, 1-0 Big 12) took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. The No. 51 duo of Seda Arantekin and Olaya Garrido-Rivas scored the lone win in doubles for TCU as the pair got the 6-4 victory over No. 50 Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Nina Khmelnitckaia. The duo has now won four straight matches with two of those coming over ranked opponents.
Garrido-Rivas picked up her second win of the day and team-best 17th singles victory this season to even up the match at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court three. Kansas responded with its own straight-set victory on court six to take the lead back and then converted on courts two and four in the third sets to take the overall match victory at 4-1.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"Kansas had a good crowd tonight and it was a fun atmosphere to play in. We competed hard and gave a lot of effort, but in the pressure moments and closeout situations we unfortunately were just not as tough and committed as we have the potential to be. We are working through some injuries and sickness, but I really feel like that didn't play a part in this match. We have a deep team and trust everyone. We will keep working on everyone's individual needs and we will improve. We still have our goals of hosting first two rounds of NCAAs and winning the Big 12. Our goals aren't changing, but our tenacity to prepare to accomplish those must change quickly. Our backs are against the wall and we can't afford to lose many more matches. We are going to come out swinging and fight like crazy to turn this season into one we have envisioned it to be. Sometimes a little adversity makes it all the more sweet in the end."
