FORT WORTH, Texas - A win on the final doubles court followed by three straight-set singles wins by the top of the lineup led the TCU men's tennis team to a 4-1 upset of No. 48 UCF on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs (4-3) split the opening two doubles matches with the Knights (6-2) as Cameron Norrie and Gianni Mancini got their first win of the season with a 6-0 victory on court three. The No. 14 pair of Alex Rybakov and Guillermo Nuñez won their sixth straight match as they broke UCF and then held to grab the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court two.
The No. 19-ranked Cameron Norrie continued his dominance in singles as he easily took care of No. 93 Korey Lovett, 6-3, 6-1, to put TCU up 2-0 in the match. Norrie is now 4-0 on the year with all the victories coming over ranked opponents on the top court. UCF would get its lone point of the match with the win on court six, before No. 112 Nuñez put the Frogs closer to the overall match victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court three. Alex Ryabkov clinched the match and his fifth straight victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court two to give TCU its first win over a ranked opponent this year.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"I thought it was a very important match for us. We needed to get back into our competitive ways. We have been struggling so far this season and we have had two really good weeks of practice, hitting the gym hard with our fitness coach and committing ourselves to a higher degree of effort and purpose in practice. I thought there was a chance today that we would come out and take care of business and that is exactly what happened. I am proud of the guys.
"The doubles point was nice. It got really close at No. 2 doubles and it was good for us to pull it out and at home because it is hard for a team to come in and win four singles from us. Obviously Cameron (Norrie) made a very good player look pretty bad and it was good to see Guillermo (Nuñez) get a win. (Alex) Rybakov finishing with an ace was an exclamation mark on the match."
