FORT WORTH, Texas - A strong start to the match followed by victories in five of the six singles matches led the TCU women's tennis team to its third straight victory of the season with a 6-1 win over Alabama on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (6-1) got off to a fast start in doubles against the Crimson Tide (4-3) and carried that into singles action as TCU grabbed its first victory in program history over Alabama. Seda Arantekin and Olaya Garrido-Rivas paired up for the first time this season and snagged a 6-4 win on court two to start action on Saturday. Just moments later, Alexis Pereira and Aleksandra Zenovka gave the Frogs the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court three.
No. 90 Arantekin moved to 6-0 in dual matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Erin Routliffe in her first match at the No. 1 spot this season and gave TCU a 2-0 lead. Marie Norris moved the Frogs lead to 3-0 as she downed Maddie Pothoff on court five, 6-3, 6-2. Alabama would get the win on court two before Zenovka grabbed the overall match victory by taking out Danielle Spielmann on court three, 6-3, 7-5.
The final two singles were played out with Olaya Garrido-Rivas finishing off Joanna Saava in a third set super tiebreaker, 10-5, to get the win on court four, while Caroline Wegner came back to down Juliana Valero, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 on the final court.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"Anytime you beat a team that we as a program have never beat, it's a big deal. We've talked about making history this season and it's nice to get a taste of that today. This finishes out a tough home stand for us and I'm proud of the girls for competing with resilience and with targets on their backs for these three matches. I have a lot of respect for Jenny (Mainz) and the program she has built at Alabama. They're always well coached in doubles and I think that was a significant point for us today. It's time to relax and recover and really celebrate this victory for two days and then we will turn our focus to Duke. But for now, we are going to enjoy the weekend."
