SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- TCU men's golf sophomore Stefano Mazzoli maintained his 36-hole lead and picked up his first career win as he took individual honors at the USF Olympic Invitational at The Olympic Club.
Mazzoli shot an even-par 71 while TCU shot a 1-over 285 as a team to jump to a third place finish in the team standings. TCU's round was tied for the best of the day while sophomore Triston Fisher's 2-under 69 was his career-low and also tied for the best round of the day.
After 36 holes on Monday, Mazzoli sat at 3-under-par and led four golfers by one stroke. His even-par 71 on Tuesday kept the Italian at 3-under-par, which was good enough to edge out Loyola Marymount's Riley Elmes by one shot.
Round of the Day
Fisher carded a career-low 2-under 69 on Tuesday. Fisher was playing in his sixth career tournament, and his first this season.
The Southlake, Texas, native started his day with a birdie on the par-5 first, then proceeded to post three more birdies. Fisher's 69 was tied for the best round of the day in the 75-golfer field.
His previous career-low round was a 71, which he carded twice at last season's Nike Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Country Club in Oregon.
Other Notables
- Mazzoli birdied three of his first seven holes, but played 3-over-par from that point to finish with an even-par 71. At the time he finished his round, Mazzoli was even Elmes who had five holes remaining. Elmes bogeyed his final hole, the par-3 eighth, to slip to 2-under=par and give Mazzoli the outright win.
- Senior Chelso Barrett shot a 1-over 72 to finish tied for 12th at 4-over-par. It was his third straight top-20 finish after finishing eighth at Pebble Beach last week and 13th at the NCAA Championships last season.
- TCU's 1-over 285 was the best round of the day. The Frogs improved in every round, as they were ninth after a first-round 295 and seventh after a second-round 288.
- TCU's 285 was its best score in a five-golfer event since the Frogs' 282 at last year's NCAA Championships gave them a first-round lead.
