FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second straight season, the No. 67 TCU women's tennis was able to upset a top-15 opponent, as the Horned Frogs defeated No. 11 Texas Tech, 4-0, to open Big 12 play on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.
The Horned Frogs (7-2, 1-0 Big 12) dominated the doubles portion of the match against a Red Raider (13-2, 0-1 Big 12) squad that had won eight straight matches and only suffered one loss on the season. The team then took the momentum into singles where they scored two quick singles wins before Olaya Garrido-Rivas stormed back to clinch TCU's fifth sweep of the season in three sets on court four.
Garrido-Rivas and Mia King opened the match by scoring their second straight victory of the season in doubles with a 6-2 win on court three, before the No. 24 pair of Caroline Wegner and Seda Arantekin closed out the point with a 6-2 win of their own on court one.
Arantekin and Alexis Pereira stormed out to the lead in singles action, as Pereira quickly score point No. 2 for TCU with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position. Arantekin followed suit by defeating Sarah Dvorak on court two, 7-5, 6-1, for her 10th win of the season. With all three other courts headed to the third set, it was Garrido-Rivas who finished off the match by coming back after dropping the first set to steal the victory from Felicity Maltby, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and give TCU the win.
Quotes of the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
Opening Statement
"Today was a culmination of the last month of training. I really feel like after our match at Stanford, the team and coaching staff got together to seriously reevaluate our direction. It was a unified decision to crank up the quality and quantity of training. The girls have responded with exceptional attitudes and I'm grateful they get to taste the rewards today of that training. I told the team last night that regardless of the outcome today, we are heading in the right direction and that is how I truly feel. I'm ecstatic about the victory over a great team and great coaches, but I'm more excited about the direction we are heading."
