FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 22 TCU women's tennis team finished off the month of January by sweeping Middle Tennessee State, 7-0, on Friday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (2-1) put together two quick doubles wins over the Blue Raiders (2-3) and then took all six singles matches in straight sets to complete its first sweep of the dual match season.
The top part of the TCU singles lineup ultimately clinched the match for the Frogs. Olaya Garrido-Rivas picked up her first dual match victory of the season by dominating Brittany Huxley on court two, 6-0, 6-4, to put TCU up 2-0 in the match. Caroline Wegner followed up that performance by defeating Luisa Zirilli at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-2, for the 3-0 lead and then freshman Marie Norris clinched her second match this season by downing Darya Shulzhanok at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-4.
Quotes of the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
Opening Statement
"It is awesome to play an outdoor match at home in January. It was 75 degrees and a beautiful day. It was awesome to have a win and get out here on the purple courts and have a nice little crowd. It was fun day for the girls."
On getting to play outside on the purple courts
"This is where we train most of the days. Even though those were home matches last weekend, we don't play a lot indoors. Coming back out here was nice and I think the girls felt at home out here on these courts. I thought MTSU played pretty well. I know they were in the rankings the first two weeks and they just dropped out this past week. I thought they competed really well and they will be in the rankings by the end of the year. It was nice to get a 7-0 victory. Overall, it was a great night on the purple court and I was happy for our team to get the win."
