FORT WORTH, Texas - Led by its three freshmen, the No. 3 TCU men's tennis team picked up a quick 4-0 victory over No. 39 San Diego State on Saturday inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in the opening match of the 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
In their first dual match as Horned Frogs (1-0), Alex Rybakov and Reese Stalder paired together to help secure the doubles point over the Aztecs (1-1). After TCU and San Diego State split the matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, the Frogs looked to the two freshmen on court three. Down 3-0 to start the match, the freshmen had to mount a comeback and forced a tiebreaker where they dominated, 7-1, to secure the doubles point and the early lead for TCU.
Stalder continued his strong play into singles action, as he only dropped one game on his way to a 6-1, 6-0 win on court six over Cornelius Kolb. Fellow classmate Eduardo Nava made it 3-0 for TCU by downing Jonas Meinzer, 6-0, 6-2 on court five. Sophomore and No. 24 Guillermo Nuñez finished off the match for the Frogs by taking a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Milen Ianakiev at the No. 3 spot.
Quotes of the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"It was great to get started with a win. I thought our guys handled it well especially with Reese (Stalder) and Alex (Rybakov) being down and coming back for the doubles point. It was really impressive for two freshmen to do that in their first dual match ever. San Diego State served very well today and they were all over us in doubles right away.
"There is always room for improvement and we will be ready for a battle tomorrow. It is always nice to get to four points like we did today with Reese, Eduardo (Nava) and Guillermo (Nuñez) each getting a quick singles point."
