FORT WORTH, Texas -- Another tiebreaking win on court three in doubles combined with dominant play in singles action pushed the No. 6 TCU men's tennis team into the Elite 8 with a 4-0 victory over No. 12 Wake Forest at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas on Thursday afternoon.
The Horned Frogs (24-7) will be making an appearance in the quarterfinals for the ninth time in program history and first time since 2001 with the victory over the Demon Deacons (24-8). TCU will face No. 13 North Carolina at Noon on Saturday in the Elite 8 matchup.
"I think we played as well as we can play," head coach David Roditi. "Obviously, that doubles point was huge and a huge momentum swing for us. Those guys at three, they're like the twins Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger. They just compliment each other and they have so much energy and they came through again just like they did against Tulsa in the last match.
"These guys, they are so hungry. Everyone knows what they went through last year and what our seniors went through and our sophomores. Then you add players like Cameron Norrie, Trevor Johnson and Guillermo Nunez who are just on fire and now we have one hell of a team. We're in the Elite 8 and it is anyone's game at this point. Now, we let our trainer do her work and we'll be just as prepared on Saturday against whoever we play."
Wake Forest was able to snag the first win in doubles action, as the No. 13 pair of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim broke No. 30 Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson for the first time in the match to take the 8-6 victory on court one. TCU was able to even up the score just moments later as Nick Chappell and Facundo Lugones paired up for the first time this season to take an 8-4 win over Jon Ho and Noah Rubin.
The decision for the doubles point would come down to a tiebreaker on court three for the second match in a row. Guillermo Nuñez and Hudson Blake faced an uphill battle from the start as they fell behind 3-0 and had to fight back and evened out the tiebreaker at 5-5. TCU pushed forward and took a 7-6 lead, as Blake used an overhead slam to seal the 8-6 victory and give the Frogs an early 1-0 lead.
TCU carried the momentum into singles action and won the first set on five of the courts. Senior captain Will Stein was the first one off the court for the Frogs as he downed Keivon Tabrizi, 6-2, 6-0 for his 23rd win of the season.
No. 59 Nuñez handled No. 16 Romain Bogaerts with ease on court two and picked up his 26th victory of the season and sixth over a ranked opponent with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
The clincher would once again fall on the shoulders of a senior, as just moments after Nuñez wrapped up his match Lugones defeated his second ranked opponent of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 106 Ho.
TCU will be facing the Tar Heels for the first time this season on Saturday. The last time the two teams met, the Frogs dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker in Chapel Hill, N.C., in 2014.
