WACO, Texas -- Down 3-2 in the match, the No. 17 TCU women's tennis team stormed back to take the final singles match and the doubles point to defeat No. 32 Texas, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Big 12 Tennis Championship on Friday night in Waco.
The Horned Frogs (18-7, 7-2) were able to snag their first victory at the championship since joining the Big 12 in 2012 with sophomore Seda Arantekin digging deep and taking her match on court six in three sets to force the doubles matches against the Longhorns (10-11, 6-3). TCU followed it up by winning courts two and three in doubles to steal the victory.
"When you start with singles first it's definitely different, and you kind of don't want to get to the three-all doubles point," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "In our situation, because we were the team down 3-2, it was the only way to do it. I was so proud of Seda (Arantekin). She was in this situation earlier in the year and completely collapsed. It's obvious when you are in this situation because everyone is watching your court. I was just proud of her for facing her fear a little bit and handling it the right way. I think we had a lot of momentum going into doubles after that."
With the inclement weather, all matches played on Friday were forced to start singles action first and TCU was able to take the first point in the match as No. 44 Simona Parajova downed Neda Koprcina, 6-1, 6-4, on court two for her 23rd victory this season and 10th consecutive win.
Texas evened up the match with a victory on court five and then took the lead after winning the match on the No. 3 court. The Frogs fought back with Palina Dubavets taking down Pippa Horn in straight sets on court four, 7-5, 6-2, to bring the match back even at 2-2.
No. 79 Stefanie Tan suffered her first loss in five matches by dropping her contest to No. 50 Breaunna Addison on court one, which moved the focus to court six.
After winning the first set 6-4, Arantekin fell in the second set 6-4 and found herself trailing 2-0 in the third set. Arantekin did not back down and battled back to take the final set 6-4 to win her 22nd match this season and force the match decision to the doubles matches.
With the match all about the doubles point, Parajova and Sofiko Kadzhaya did what they have done for the last 11 straight matches and started TCU off with a win. The duo remained undefeated on court three with a 6-4 victory over Ratnika Batra and Lina Padegimaite. The clincher would be court two, as Dubavets and Pereira battled back from a 4-1 deficit to take down Koprcina and Horn, 6-4, to seal the comeback victory.
TCU will continue action at the championships and will face No. 8 Baylor at 3 p.m., on Saturday in the semifinals.
