FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 17 TCU men's tennis team opened its Big 10 double-header weekend with a 5-0 blanking of No. 70 Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (10-5) defeated the Wolverines (3-8) with ease in doubles action, before notching four singles victories in straight sets to seal the team's 10th win of the season.
"We played very well today all across the board," head coach David Roditi said. "We took advantage of nice weather all week and had a chance to practice on unlimited courts for unlimited time due to spring break. That kind of preparation helps us play at the level we are capable of playing. Michigan is a very good program and they are going through a transition year. I have no doubt that Coach Steinberg will have them back to were they typically are, which is near the top."
In doubles action, Hudson Blake and Guillermo Nuñez paired up for only the second time this season and dominated on court three, by shutting out Kevin Wong and Tyler Gardiner, 6-0, for the first win for TCU.
The Frogs would have to battle for the final victory to claim the doubles point, as the team found themselves trailing on courts one and two. After being down a break, No. 29 Nick Chappell and Will Stein fought back to take control of their court and win, 6-4, and clinch the point for TCU.
TCU opened singles action by taking first set victories on all six courts. Seniors Arnau Dachs and Facundo Lugones would push the Frog lead to 3-0, with commanding wins at the bottom of the lineup. Lugones only allowed his opponent to win one game, as the Argentina native notched a 6-1, 6-0 win, for his 10th overall win this season.
Dachs was just as dominant in his match and only allowed his opponent to win two games in his match, as the Vic, Spain, native scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
No. 31 Cameron Norrie scored his first win at No. 2 singles and clinched the match for TCU, as the freshman won his 15th match of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michael Zhu. Just moments later, No. 116 Guillermo Nuñez wrapped up his 14th straight victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Runhao Hua at No. 3 singles.
TCU will wrap up its double-header by taking on No. 4 Illinois on Monday at 11 a.m., on the Bernard J. `Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
"I beg all fans, students and staff to come out tomorrow as we battle No. 4 Illinois at home," Roditi said. "We will feed everyone and even give them free chair massages."
