FORT WORTH -- The TCU men and women's indoor track and field teams wrapped up the season opener in College Station, taking home a school record and two Reveille Invitational meet records.
Senior Brianna McGhee broke an 11-year-old school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a first-place time of 8.26. MaKeatha Cooper set the previous record (8.30) on Feb. 28, 2004.
Senior Ronnie Baker had the best season-opener of his career in the 60-meter dash on Saturday. His first-place time of 6.61 moved him to the top of the national rankings in that event. Both McGhee's and Baker's performances broke meet records for the Reveille Invitational.
"I thought we got off to a good start," said director of track and field Darryl Anderson. "As early as it is and finishing fall training, the kids like Baker, McGhee, Paola Miranda and Sam Watts know what they are and where their position is in the program. They came in here and did a great job."
Watts, a senior from London, won the 200-meter race with a time of 20.95.
"Watts opening up under 21 seconds is a first for him. We had quite a few good performances," said Anderson.
Freshman Darrion Flowers began his collegiate career with a third-place finish in the 60 meters, clocking in at 6.77.
Junior Iphona-Clemence Paiement recorded a time of 7.60 in the women's 60-meter dash, placing third.
Following McGhee in the 60-meter hurdles was junior Makaila Flannigan at second with a time of 8.68. Freshman Lexi Aitken placed fourth at 8.82.
Sophomore Briona Oliver found success in the women's long jump, recording a second-place mark of 5.68m (18-7.75).
TCU swept the men's throwing events. Sophomore Adam Hood won the shot put with a personal-best mark of 14.28m (46-10.25) while junior Adam Damadzic finished first in the weight throw, recording a mark of 17.91m (58-9.25).
Junior Paola Miranda had a productive first meet, placing third in the weight throw with a career-best mark of 17.68m (58-0.25).
"The most important thing to me is that we got out of here relatively healthy, and now they can go into their finals and winter break. All in all, mission accomplished and we move forward."
