FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's tennis team completed fall competition on Saturday, as No. 19 Guillermo Nuñez was able to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Nuñez battled through two tough three-set matches in the consolation bracket and opened the day by downing No. 30 Uros Petronijevic of San Diego. The sophomore dropped the opening set, 6-3, but stormed back to take the final two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to take the victory and move into the semifinals.
In the next round, the Santiago, Chile, native faced his second straight top-30 opponent in No. 25 Benjamin Lock of Florida State. Nuñez would take the early lead by claiming the first set, 7-5, but it was not enough. Lock battled back and snagged the win with 6-2, 6-1 victories in the final two sets to advance to the consolation final.
Quotes from the Day
Head Coach David Roditi
"Unfortunately, this loss ends our fall season. Benjamin Lock showed his maturity and did a better job of playing every point. Guillermo knows exactly what he must work on. He was able to play four more matches against the best players and college. Now we must improve more than our competition between now and the kick off tournament in the spring. We have ways to go if we want to be in the mix for a conference title."
