ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - TCU track and field's Sam Watts produced the world's fastest time this season in the men's 200 meters on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the New Mexico Team Invitational in Albuquerque.
Watts, a junior from London, England, charged down the track in 20.69 seconds in his first race in the event this season, smashing his previous personal best of 21.05. It's the second-fastest indoor time in school history.
"I thought we had a good day today," director of track and field Darryl Anderson said. "We had a lot of personal bests today, which is really great for this early in the season.
"Sam Watts had a big personal best in the 200 and Ronnie Baker had another breakthrough performance in the 60 meters. We had a lot of really good performances today. Now we'll get back to business and get ready for Texas A&M next weekend."
Finishing in second-place behind Watts was junior Ronnie Baker, who paced to a time of 20.92.
Earlier in the day, Baker claimed the men's 60 meters crown, clocking in at 6.56 seconds. His time puts him at No. 2 in TCU's record books and is the third-fastest time recorded in NCAA competition this season. Kolby Listenbee's time of 6.67 in the event was also a personal-best.
Sophomore Cameron Echols-Luper finished second in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.62m (25-0). His jump is the third-best indoor mark in program history.
Senior Megan Smith took third place in the women's shot put at 16.01m (52-6.5). She improved by over four feet from her marks at the Texas A&M Team Invitational on Jan. 17.
"Megan Smith threw the shot put well today," Anderson said. "That was something we expected her to do and we feel good about her performance today."
In the men's 400 meters, freshman Kevin McClanahan paced to a fourth-place finish with a time of 47.72.
Redshirt freshman Scotty Newton placed fourth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.03m (49-2.25). It's the fifth best indoor mark in program history.
Arin Rice, another redshirt freshman, picked up a fifth-place mark in the women's 800 meters at 2:15.36. It's the eighth best indoor mark in the program record books.
Junior Adam Damadzic finished fifth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 18.00m (59-0.75), almost seven feet better than his previous best.
In the women's 60 meter hurdles, sophomore Makaila Flannigan posted a sixth-place time at 8.44. Her time ranks fourth all-time and is also a new personal record.
Sophomore Iphona-Clemence Paiement finished sixth in the women's 60 meters finals at 7.54. Her mark is a personal-best, set only two weeks after achieving the same feat in College Station.
Up next for the Horned Frogs is the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 7, in College Station.
